Wenvoe commercial multiplexes at full power from 27th April 2011

In the fifth switchover week for 2011, the final two commercial multiplexes will be powered up to full output.

Welsh viewers in the areas around Cardiff, Bridgeend, Merthyr Rydil and Newport as some viewers in Bristol, Weston-Super-Mare, the Minehead will have improved reception from Wednesday.

The SDN (formally multiplex A) and Arqiva-A (former multiplex C) were held at low power and temporary frequencies, to prevent interference to existing analogue transmitters in the west of central England.

Now that this neighbouring region has switched over, SDN will move to 50kW output on C42+ (from 10kW on C51) and ArqA will move to 50kW output on C45 (from 10kW on C30).

This means if you have been unable to receive these services from Wenvoe, you will now be able to do so, if you can already receive the ArqB multiplex.

However, because of the frequency change, if you use Wenvoe for your digital reception, you will need to do a "first time installation" retune on Wednesday 27th April 2011.

Gerry Lowe: You should already have BBC One Wales and BBC TWO Wales from Wenvoe.

Gerry Lowe: The Wenvoe transmitter, near Cardiff, only transmits the Welsh variants. It has only ever transmitted the Welsh variants. If you want English variants, you need to point your aerial at the Mendip transmitter. However, there are parts of the Bristol Channel coast that are shadowed - Digital UK suggests that your reception from Mendip will be variable and will get worse as the switchover programme completes.

If the aerial is already pointing at Mendip, see Digital Region Overlap for suggestions.

It's worth noting (because no one ever mentions it) that a good number of homes in Swansea are served by the Wenvoe transmitter as well...like mine for example. So I'm happy about the news as well. I also pick up (intentionally) English BBC, ITV from Mendip, although the signal can be variable due to the weather.

Over the past few days I have lost ITV3 and a few other channels. Has this got anything to do with the Wenvoe changeover?

Tracyy: If you use Wenvoe, as it says above, you must do a "first time installation". If you won't use Wenvoe, no.

For the last 6 months I've been receiving satisfactory service of Channels 41+,44,51 and 30 from Wenvoe. Signal 75% Quality 100% on Channels 41+ & 44. Lower signal and poorer quality on Channels 51 & 30 with ocasional drop outs on picture, but better than nothing off the local Merthyr Tydfil transmitter. I've never been able to get Channel 49 successfully, just ocasional breakthrough of the picture when conditions have been good. Since the change in frequency on 27th I can't receive the new channels 42+ and 45, no signal at all? Given this change included a POWER UP!! I anticipated better reception from Arquiva A and SDN. I'm in a fairly low position near the top of Cyfarthfa Park, but with good reception of Channels 41+&44. Unless this change is a work in progress, then I can only assume the new transmitter aerials are lower on the mast at Wenvoe, eliminating my reception. Any other ideas or information will be appreciated please.

Steve: Your problem is that the Trefechan transmitter to your north-west uses the same channels, destroying your reception of these multiplexes. Trefechan uses channels for digital services that it used for analogue services before switchover - the commercial multiplexes at Wenvoe had to be squeezed in somewhere, and it's almost inevitable that there would be a clash for someone.

The commercial multiplex operators have refused the opportunity to transmit from any more sites.

Newport

I'm in Newport NP19 7SJ and since the change on the 27th I'm getting decreased reception in terms of power for 42 and 45 than I was getting on 30 and 51. In fact 42 is now showing as medium strength and I anticipate losing reception in less favourable weather. So was there a power up or just a frequency change?

Merlot: Yes, the power increased. "Medium" signal strength is usually the correct level.
