When Freeview boxes scan for channels and find them from more than one transmitter, they stick the "extra" versions of the channels on numbers 800-899.

Most boxes start their channel scans at C21 and scan to C68, and this means that you get the versions of the channels on the lowest frequencies in the defined channel numbers, the higher ones are placed on the 800s.

It's impossible for the set-top box to understand where the aerial is pointing if it receives signals from more than one transmitter.

My mothers box had this problem except channels 1 - 9 were missing so she HAD to remember the 8xx series for BBC1, 2 and 24 amongst others. I eventually figured out how to manually tune to the six "channels" MUXs on Bluebell Hill as I think the box was getting distracted by Dover !. Now she has automatically updated in the last few weeks and got the same proble. This time a manual tune is not working. I delete all channels (replace with no aerial).

This is doing my head in and I think SKY are going to make a fortune out of people who pay a licence fee and are denied access to TV. I have to travel a long way just to mess about with this technology so its not vert free. I personally dont like to pay a monthly subs but its going that way. Please feel free to pass my comments on to Freeview - Goodbye.

Peter: If a signal is there to receive but is only being received at a low signal strength then auto-tuning is always inclined to pass it by because of the ladder climbing way that auto tuning works, whereas manual tuning always works.

You should first of all carry out a default or factory reset on the box to guarantee that no remnants from previous scans exist to corrupt the EPG listings, then follow this action with another manual scan of the muxes required, Bluebell Hill being: 59 - 24 - 27 - 45 - 42 - 39, these channels by the way only applying until June 13th when BBC changes from 59 to 46, then with another scan being required on June 27th when other mux channel changes take place, but thankfully with these being the final ones as far as channel changes are concerned, other events happening after that date not requiring any further re-tuning to be carried out.

Peter: Forgot to add, go into the boxes menu and switch off the automatic updates to stop the listings from continually being upset.

Peter: Some receivers, having performed the automatic tuning scan, will ask the user to choose the "Network" or "Region". This is in fact selection of which transmitter to go with. It is therefore important to ensure that the correct one is selected and that the default should not necessarily be chosen (which could be the first one in alphabetically).
