How to Reset a Sky Digibox when 'No Signal' appears.

Reset method 1 - Delete and Rescan

  1. Turn the power off at the mains socket. Either do this by pulling the plug from the socket, or using a power switch if there is one.

  2. Remove the viewing card from the machine. Using a dry cloth or kitchen roll, clean the gold connector on the reverse of the card. Do not use any cleaning products.

  3. Check cables and connectors are in good order.
  4. Wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. With the card still out of the machine, plug the Digibox back into the mains.
  6. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  7. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  8. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  9. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

Reset Method 2 - Reset the LNB

If the above method does not work, the LNB may have a fault.
  1. Press the [SERVICES] button and then press [4] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

On Sky HD, press the [SERVICES] button and then press [0] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

Press the buttons in the sequence above exactly - do not atttempt to use [UP] or [DOWN]. Note that when you press the second 0 and 1 nothing happens on the screen until you press the final [SELECT]. This is a "hidden menu".

  2. Then press [1] to go to the RF output menu.
  3. Press [DOWN] three times to highlight the line 22Khz Command and then press [RIGHT] to change the value to [OFF].
  4. Press [DOWN] and [SELECT] to select Save New Settings.
  5. Press [SKY].
  6. Again press [SERVICES], [4], [0], [1], [SELECT]; then [1] again for the LNB Menu. (SERVICES 0 0 1 SELECT for Sky HD).
  7. Now press the [RED] button (reset all settings), then [DOWN] until you can select Save New Settings again.
  8. Press [SKY].

Reset Method 3 - Upgrade the system software

If there are still problems:

  1. Turn the Digibox off at the mains again and remove the viewing card.
  2. Whilst holding down the BACKUP key on the Digibox - NOT ON THE REMOTE - turn the mains power on.
  3. Keep hold of BACKUP until the screen displays a "UPGRADING SYSTEM SOFTWARE" message – this will be white text on a black screen. On some boxes this can appear as a half screen.

  4. Wait 10 to 20 minutes for the software to download and install. The box will restart when the process is complete.
  5. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  6. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  7. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  8. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

Paul Parkinson: This can be caused by a number of different reasons, many of being by-passed if you could either try the box on someone else's dish (even if single feed) or alternatively them trying their box on yours.

However, as two input feeds are used on that box then the first thing to try is swapping the LNB1 and LNB2 inputs over, because any problem that might have developed on the LNB1 input feed will trigger that warning as LNB1 is the main input, LNB2 used mostly for recording purposes.

If the situation is still the same then the next ting to do is carry out a signal level check using the following procedure, as even although "no signal" might be indicated its not necessarily the case that none whatsoever is there, as it could be but at a reduced level to that required for reception.

Check the signal strength / quality using this procedure: (Sky+ HD with later menu)

(1): Press services on your Sky remote control then press the right arrow once to navigate from "Options to "Settings", pressing on this will cause the menu change to one with "Picture" being highlighted. (do not press on this)

(2): Press the right arrow three times to select and press on "Signal", the grey bars now displayed will show you the strength / quality level of the signal.

Any signal level indicated has to around the 55% (or equivalent of) minimum level to resolve a picture and especially where the quality is concerned, because if the quality is observed to be under that of the signal strength then that generally indicates that the dish has moved slightly and requires re-aligning, this usually (although not always!) being rectified by it being moved the merest fraction either way in its horizontal (right to left) plane.

If though nothing is indicated then you will have to check the LNB settings using the undermentioned procedure.

LNB checking - reset on a Sky HD box:-

(1): Press services on your Sky remote control then press the right arrow once to navigate from "Options to "Settings", pressing on this will cause the menu change to one with "Picture" being highlighted. (do not press on this)

3: Press "0 - 1 - Select" in quick succession to access the Installer setup menu (this menu is not listed on the Settings menu options).

4: Finally press Select to see the Setup menu displayed and with the Hi and Lo band frequencies indicated.

The correct LNB values should read:

LNB Type: Standard
1: Low Band LO Frequency: 9.75
2: High Band LO Frequency:10.60
3: LNB Power Supply: ON
4: 22 KHz Command: ON

Press the red button to reset them to default values even although they may
already be indicating them.

Whilst on the installers menu you should also check "TXponder" to the right of "Set up" the correct values for this as below.

Frequency: 11.778
Polarisation: V
Symbol Rate (Mbaud): 27.5
FEC: 2/3

Further advice dependant on results, although if all settings appeared to be OK you could try "Install" which you may have noticed in the set up menu.

I've read a few of the posts here on the "no signal" problem.

I started having problems quite recently where the channels start switching as I'm watching live TV. This even occurs whilst watching and recording on planner.

I have a Sky+HD 1TB box and went through the troubleshooting process on Sky's site. Eventually I spoke with 2 people on the chat line. I was advised to unscrew the connections on the box and switch back on after 3 mins. This made the problem worse as now I'm getting, "Your Sky+HD box isn't getting a signal."

I get no signal strength but am able to access services, etc. One advisor wanted me to do a full system reboot but this would wipe my planner clean which is not a good option. I pointed out this has nothing to do with the planner as the channel switching occurs on live TV also.

Can you help?

I should point out this is a multi-room box which was added 04-01-2013 and worked well until about 2 weeks ago. The weather conditions are fine now though we've had snow as many have over the past few weeks. The other boxes in the house have not had this issue.

Jef: With regards to your 12.53PM and slightly later 12.57PM posting, although I am unaware as to everything that has been suggested by Sky but though wondered what the result would be if you swapped the two LNB input connectors over? my reason for asking being that LNB1 is the main input and anything defective about that input will trigger the "no signal" message even although LNB2 input might be perfectly OK.

The other thing I did not see you mention is the result of carrying out a signal check, as although the "no signal" warning might well be seen indicated its not necessarily the case of no signal at all, as it could still be there but at a low level thats not high enough to resolve a picture.

If you refer to my 4.26PM posting (of 24th) where I am replying to Paul Parkinson, this posting seen above your own 12.53PM one made today, use this for reference regarding the the procedure to use for carrying out these various checks.

But with regards to the box in question changing channels on its own, although this strongly suggests a fault with the box what I would like you to try is that once you have selected a programme place the remote control out of sight of the TV in another room and leave it there for as long as necessary to verify that the control isn't faulty, as although this is not by any means a common problem its likewise not unheard of either.

The final thing being, if you have another box in the house then why don't you try swapping them over on a temporary basis, as this would save a multitude of checks having to be made if it was discovered that the problem also changed location.

Never had so much grief in getting a signal. Three times and over two hours on each occassion. 12 years a loyal customer and eventually the helpline put me throught to the cancellation desk who says 'well do you want to cancel'.
Not great!

Thanks jb. I had a good go at the connectors. What I'd been struggling with is placing them back in properly. The male wire that sticks out at the end of the cable bends easily. If you're not seeing this you'll get the "no signal" sign.

I've placed my remote outside the room to see if this resolves the switching channel issue. Will update you on this in a few days to see if it's worked.

Thanks again.

Oh, as you said, make sure the cables are replaced in the same input or you'll continue receiving the "no signal" sign.

Jef: Should you are referring to the two inputs from the dish then it should not matter what way they are replaced as both are technically identical, however if you have found that they only work one way then that indicates that there is a fault on one of them, the way to test which one being to select BBC on 101 (or it could be any channel) and if the picture is seen swap the two inputs over, if the picture is found to have vanished then that input is defective.

Further info dependant on whether or not this was found to have happened.

By the way, the copper core should only protrude about 3MM maximum from the front of the "F" connector as well as having been cut at a slight angle, the core siding into the socket much easier if its been snipped that way whereas not so if its been cut parallel.
