How to Reset a Sky Digibox when 'No Signal' appears.

Reset method 1 - Delete and Rescan

  1. Turn the power off at the mains socket. Either do this by pulling the plug from the socket, or using a power switch if there is one.

  2. Remove the viewing card from the machine. Using a dry cloth or kitchen roll, clean the gold connector on the reverse of the card. Do not use any cleaning products.

  3. Check cables and connectors are in good order.
  4. Wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. With the card still out of the machine, plug the Digibox back into the mains.
  6. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  7. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  8. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  9. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

Reset Method 2 - Reset the LNB

If the above method does not work, the LNB may have a fault.
  1. Press the [SERVICES] button and then press [4] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

On Sky HD, press the [SERVICES] button and then press [0] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

Press the buttons in the sequence above exactly - do not atttempt to use [UP] or [DOWN]. Note that when you press the second 0 and 1 nothing happens on the screen until you press the final [SELECT]. This is a "hidden menu".

  2. Then press [1] to go to the RF output menu.
  3. Press [DOWN] three times to highlight the line 22Khz Command and then press [RIGHT] to change the value to [OFF].
  4. Press [DOWN] and [SELECT] to select Save New Settings.
  5. Press [SKY].
  6. Again press [SERVICES], [4], [0], [1], [SELECT]; then [1] again for the LNB Menu. (SERVICES 0 0 1 SELECT for Sky HD).
  7. Now press the [RED] button (reset all settings), then [DOWN] until you can select Save New Settings again.
  8. Press [SKY].

Reset Method 3 - Upgrade the system software

If there are still problems:

  1. Turn the Digibox off at the mains again and remove the viewing card.
  2. Whilst holding down the BACKUP key on the Digibox - NOT ON THE REMOTE - turn the mains power on.
  3. Keep hold of BACKUP until the screen displays a "UPGRADING SYSTEM SOFTWARE" message – this will be white text on a black screen. On some boxes this can appear as a half screen.

  4. Wait 10 to 20 minutes for the software to download and install. The box will restart when the process is complete.
  5. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  6. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  7. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  8. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

tom millward:

if you have run 2 extra cables from the dish to the second location then you should first try fitting the box in the location that you know works, if the box works in this location then you know the issue is with your cable run.

I have never come across a LNB that has a faulty port, usually its all or nothing, if the issue is with what you have fitted then you should double check the connections as this can make all the difference.

You say "I am using twin core cable" but do you really mean coaxial cable? Or perhaps 'shotgun' cable which has 2 separate feeds within a 'figure of 8' outer sheath. Or have you used 2-core mains cable? I will assume that you have a quad LNB that now has 4 cables emerging from the undershield?
You must use good quality coaxial cable designed for use with satellite signals, UHF coaxial cable has far too much loss to be any use. You also need to check that the plugs at both ends are fitted correctly and that there is no short circuit between the inner core and the outer sheath.

Since my last software update on my Sky HD box, every time I switch it on it is sitting on Channel 998, irrespective of what channel it was last on / recording. Is this a new 'feature'?? It's not a big problem ; I just wondered why it was happening and is it everyone?

When you say 'switch on' do you mean switching the mains supply back on or just bringing out of the standby mode?

If you turn the mains power off, it will always restart on programme number 998 after it has rescanned. It is unwise to switch the mains supply off on these and Freeview boxes, it hardly saves any power (a Sky+ box uses just 0.9 Watts in standby mode which at 12p per unit would cost 8p per year to leave the mains supply on!)
My box does not show that behaviour if I use the standby mode.

Sorry, I meant 'bring out of standby' : it is never switched/powered off (apart from when we had a power cut last month during the storms). I have got someone at Sky on the case, as there is another guy who has the same issue, also starting when they sent out the latest software update (which added enhanced search facilities). Have done a Planner Rebuild as they suggested, but makes no difference. When I come out of standby after a few hours, it is always now on 998, at any time of day. If it has only been on standby for a few mins, it comes back on the last channel, as it should. It is as if it is repeating the update every few hours, and then leaving the box on 998.

Have experimented, and found this happens after the box has been on Standby recording 2 channels simultaneously. In fact, when I called up the Planner to check both were recording, it told me if I wanted to watch Ch 998, I'd have to stop one of the recordings. I actually stopped both, and then hit the Sky button for live TV, and it took me to a blue screen that claimed to be Ch 102 (the channel I was on before going to Standby), but when I hit channel DOWN it went to Ch 996, and UP took me to Ch 998.

It rather sounds as if the new firmware has not been designed/coded/tested properly as it appears it is confused about which channel to return to after the 2 recordings have finished. Does it behave properly if only 1 recording is made? Does it behave as wanted simply after watching normally and then putting into and then out of standby?

The answers are Yes and Yes : seems fine when recording 1 programme (returns/stays on last-viewed channel) ; and returns to last-viewed channel if put into and out of standby when not recording. The reason I had originally thought it was always switching to Ch 998, is because every weekday I have 2 programmes recording simultaneously at 1.45 ; and most days I also have 2 programmes recording together at some point during the evening ; thus the situation that causes the problem occurs frequently in our house! However, since I can only find one other person on the internet who has complained of the same problem, I can't believe this is happening to everyone : or do most people just NOT record 2 programmes together very often??

It's clearly a firmware design 'glitch' that does not allow for recording 2 different programmes at the same time and a return to a previously select programme. In my view, it should revert to the programme originally being viewed before the 2 recordings started, but it clearly isn't doing that. There's no known 'work-around' apart from reselecting the programme you want rather than the somewhat staid 'programme' on 998!
I'd suggest the only course of action will be to inform Sky of the problem - but don't hold your breath!
Incidentally, the software used is developed by a 'third party' contractor, my brother used to work for one such outside Winchester but there are other sources used as well.
