jb38, pleased I have got things about right re the dish and PVR,.. Now as you so rightly say,' think along the lines of taking a look at the Humax range of Freesat PVRs' That is exactly what I have been doing, but here seems to be a train of thought that Humax are about to make the FT 2 , obsolete and move on to other models ?? .Other than that , yes,I do have leanings to that model , to fill the gap. By the way, I would ask , what use , if any, can the replaced Sky+ box be used for? Scrap ???

Vin Roberts: Although technology is constantly evolving you have nothing to worry about if thinking about purchasing one of these Humax Freesat PVR devices, as a great deal of assumptions and general scaremongering always goes on in these forums basically from people with "bees in their bonnets" about one thing or another.

As far as a redundant+ Sky box is concerned, it can always be used as a standard Sky box as it in effect reverts to just that without a subscription being in force, although "if" you wanted to use it in another room then it would require its own feed (single) from the dish, and so if your LNB is only of the two outlet port type then the LNB would require to be changed to a Quad block and this would leave one outlet spare in case of emergencies like for instance one of the outlets failing, as all outputs are independent of each other and so the "F" connector would only require to be swapped over to the spare port.

Of course that is only if its a twin output block in the first place, as many Sky engineers fitted quad blocks as standard as the price difference is minimal between the two types. (complete LNB kit obtainable for around £10.00 or so from a number of e-bay outlets)

Have a look up at where the coax cables enter the LNB, as you "might" see two outlet ports unused.

Hello jb38, yet again, thanks for your info.
Indeed , I seem to have learned quite a lot in a fairly short time , thanks to your tutoring. Have never looked, or needed, to examine the dish and LNB's, but understand the need for a quad as opposed to the twin block (must take a 'peep') if I require an extra in a spare room.. Finally, may I once more offer my sincere thanks for your great help in 'putting me wise' to the ways of 'feed' etc,The Humax will certainly be the way to. Best wishes .Vin Roberts

vin roberts: Many thanks for your kind comments! and I am pleased to have been of assistance, as I fully appreciate that the various systems in use can on occasions appear to be a bit of a mystery to anyone not acquaint with them, albeit that in reality they are all very similar in certain respects.

By the way, one of my own three Humax devices is a Foxsat HDR (320Gb) and which has been in constant use for nearly three years now, and with the only problem that's ever experienced with it now and again being the well known one of the remote control (actual control not the box) locking up, cured by simply lifting the end of one of the batteries, pressing any button on the remote to discharge the offending component, then pushing the battery down again.

All equipment can suffer from the odd problem now and again, but with Humax devices its far less frequent than with most others, plus there is always plenty of assistance around from various sources including the excellent Humax forum, and where obviously advice / assistance is dedicated purely to Humax devices.

Best Regards / jb.

jb38, Yet more thanks to you for the vote of confidence in Humax. They are an unknown quantity with me,. I am aware that I may or may not be as 'lucky'? as yourself, but, that's life..As for the remote battery 'hiccup', yes, I find that rolling the AAA's does the trick , sometimes too.. Perhaps to do with slight 'oxidising' on the contacts !
If indeed I require further help, at least (with your indulgence) I will know where to come ! Again, many thanks ,and best wishes

Why are we only going to get FREEVIEW LIGHT on the Whitby mast and, not the FULL Freeview service??

Philip Easton: Because the Commercial broadcasters don't wish to pay to transmit from the small sites like Whitby.

They achieve a 90% coverage of the population by broadcasting from 81 of the largest transmitters (largest by viewer population).

For them to transmit from the 1,000 plus relays, including Whitby, would roughly double their cost of transmission whilst only adding 8.5% of the population to their potential viewer bases.

They operate purely for profit from advertising which they show to viewers which they wish to acquire most of for least cost.

The broadcasters that will be carried on the Whitby transmitter are the Public Service ones. As the name implies, they have a Public Service obligation which the Commercial ones don't. It's down to Parliament for not making it mandatory for the Commercial licencees to mirror the coverage of the Public Service networks.

Hi,
I have two standard sky boxes (Not Sky +) upstairs in the bedrooms. I purchased the Sky viewing cards and get the standard programmes.
If I leave Sky and take up the Talk Talk offer of a freeview HD box (which will have to be connected to my aerial), will I still be able to use my Sky boxes as they are connected up to the satellite dish.

David Noble-Nesbitt: Yes! as the only common connection between both systems will be your TV, because the Sky boxes will be using the scart connections on your TV and with the Freeview HD box being coupled into the TV using an HDMI lead, this presuming that your TV has an HDMI socket hence why you are after the HD box from Talk Talk, as a scart connection only allows SD.
