Channel 4 +1 on 20 August
August 20 is all-change day for Channel 4 on Freeview, satellite, cable and BT Vision.
The controversial public corporation will introduce the first timeshifted version of a "main channel" to the UK.
Plus one channels are popular with broadcaters because they allow them to mop up a fair quanity of extra viewers for a channel with no substantial outlay for the broadcaster. They started in the US on their satellite television networks because Uncle Sam's terratory covers several timezones.
The changes - Freeview
Film4+1, which replaced the appauling "Quizcall" channel on multiplex 2, will be removed from Freeview. The replacement is "Channel 4+1" which will replay all the programming - live, US acquisitions - and regional advertisments an hour later. On 20 August a rescan for channels on Freeview (also BT Vision) will result in:
- 4 - Channel 4 (as before)
- 13 - new Channel 4+1 (was More4)
- 14 - More 4 (was E4)
- 29 - E4 (was Film4)
- 30 - E4+1 (as before)
- 32 - Film4 (was Film4+1)
Some Freeview boxes are unhappy with channels swapping slots - if it does not work for you please follow the "My Freeview box has no EPG, is missing Film4 or the channel line up is wrong" procedure.
Digital satellite
- 104 - Channel 4 (as before)
- 135 - new Channel 4+1
- 136 - E4
- 137 - E4+1
- 138 - More 4
- 139 - More 4+1
- 315 - Film4
- 316 - Film4+1
Virgin Media
- 104 - Channel 4 (as before)
- 143 - new Channel 4+1 (was More4+1)
Chief Executive of Channel 4 Andy Duncan said: "This gives our viewers another opportunity to watch Channel 4s high-quality content whilst ensuring maximum value from our investment in commissioned programming. Given the ongoing shift in consumer behaviour within television, we believe the launch of Channel 4+1 is a logical strategic move. Its consistent with our commitment to do everything appropriate to secure Channel 4s public service model longer term."
