What price for an aerial installation?

What prices have you been quoted and paid for an aerial installation?

What prices have you been quoted and paid for an aerial install
published on UK Free TV

In responses to the guideline I posted about how much having a new aerial fitted should cost, Ian Grice posted: "£40-£50? Every aerial fitter I contacted wants at least £150+VAT considering you can get a class 3 aerial for under £10 and a class 2 for under £15 and cable is 40p a metre why are they charging so much for 30 minutes work?"

OK, for some places putting up a TV aerial is hard work, such as multi-story properties. As many people will simply be exchanging a Group A, B, C/D, E or K aerial for a wideband type, often without changing the supporting pole or cable, a high price cannot be justified.

I am concerned that some companies will exploit vulnerable groups (such as the elderly).

So, I what prices have you been quoted for aerial installations? What price have you paid for installation?

Do you know of any companies to avoid? Do you know of any companies that are good value for money?

Or do you work for a great aerial installation company?

Hey Adrian,
Just a thought have you been to the police or trading standards.
It might be worth paying someone a £25 call out to come round and get a full price to put everything right in writing that you can keep in a draw just in case you do end up being taken to court.
Fair enough it's your word against 3 of them but if you have an independent company telling you it's bad work on paper that's got to be better than an eye witness.
Also if you do pay someone else to sort agree a price and please try and make every effort you can to give the equipment that the original aerial bodgers used back to them.
The last thing you want as you have refused to pay them (which if it was a family member of mine I would have stopped the cheque too just out of spite, ileagal or not. Fair play) trying to charge you for their own gear.
Even if you drive to their office and leave it in the door step just take a picture and drive off.
The courts can be a nasty thing, the last thing you want is them on your back buddy.

Hey Adrain
what I dont understand is whey were they messing with aerial cables when they were supposed to be fitting a dish for you? did you not explain to them what you wanted first before any work was done , sounds a bit funny to me you should have sent them packing before it started going down hill,if I go to a customer the first thing I do is listen to what the customer wants then explain where every thing goes agree on a price and get on with the job ,they must be cheap scates if they can,t afford a 24volt drill, and 3 of them turn up to fit a dish!name and shame that's what you need to do,,, Tom Fletcher Alpha Aerials Sheffield.

I've been reading that freeview signals will be stronger once the switchover happens, so does that mean that people who haven't been able to get freeview up till now may be able to afterwards?? If not, then is it better (or cheaper) to have a new aerial or a dish fitted? I'm on a low income so I would appreciate any help and advise so I don't spend money on the wrong thing, thank you

Gill: The aim is that everyone who got (or could get) good quality analogue signals before switchover should be able to get at least the public service channels after switchover. That means, in addition to the former analogue channels, the BBC's additional channels (CBBC, CBeebies, BBC Three, BBC Four, the BBC News channel and interactive streams) and many of ITV's and Channel 4's additional channels. In addition everyone should get Channel 5, which wasn't available to everyone.

The full range of Freeview channels will only be available from main transmitters, but should still cover about 90% of the UK population. The commercial multiplex operators refused the option to broadcast from the relay sites, which fill in gaps in coverage. See 'Freeview Light' for more information.

The analogue signals are switched off at the switchover date. It's Freeview or nothing, through an aerial.

To be able to give proper advice we need a full postcode to pinpoint where you are, and how good a signal you can expect to get. Most people won't need a new aerial, as long as the aerial and cables are in good condition.

In response to why it costs so much to install an aerial. Firstly £150 is very expensive for a basic install, and average in the Leeds area is between £90-£120, but keep in mind the material cost is not really a factor here. You have an installer who is qualified and should own a decent meter to get the very best from the available signal (not a cheap £10 beep meter) he will also have to own several types of ladders, tools, drills, have attended a working at heights course, have public liability insurance and finally and most importantly is putting himself at risk by climbing on your roof.

If you want to pay £50 for an aerial, then go to screwfix get yourself a cheap aerial and a £10 meter and then get on your roof and try not to fall off.

People need to realise that just because you can buy equipment cheap, tradesmen are not going to install it for a loss.
I recently paid £135 for my satellite dish to be moved onto my chimney and felt this was excellent quality for money as there was no way I was going to risk my life climbing up there.
Heating engineers, plumbers, electricians all charge a high rate albeit it is cheaper per hour that an aerial installer but most of there jobs last for days if not weeks and involve very little risk to themselves.

I am desperately after a freeview reception, all i can get is a low standard normal TV reception on channels 1 - 5, when i connect my freeview box to the TV i get no reception on it at all "NO SIGNAL" is what it says.

I have phoned and emailed several aerial installers in this area and honestly, they have either answered the phone and hung up straight away, or not bothered to respond to my email for a quote, so i will try to install it myself. Can someone offer me some advice on tools i will need and maybe a link to a DIY aerial installation instruction? I don't fear getting on roof tops and i will have no problem up there, i just need to know where to start, i can get a decent freeview aerial for £20.

Michael: Can you provide your full postcode? It's worth checking first if you're expected to get a service yet, will have to wait for switchover, or whether it will never work that well. If you're in an area known (or believed) not to be covered, it's possible that the installers won't bother with the query. You could try looking at the Confederation of Aerial Installers directory at Directory . Search for Type 'Installers: Domestic' in your county. Or, try the Registered Digital Installers Licensing Board list at http://www.rdi-lb.tv/ If you're determined to go ahead and do it yourself, I suggest reading Planning Your TV Installation (RG47SH)

Hey buddy if you are worried about getting a freeview reception, it may be cheaper by the time you have paid for in worst cases
20ft pole
Good bracketry to support
Good aerial
Mast head amp etc
Why not look into freesat unless there Is a tree or something in line of sight you will get pretty much the same freeview channels.
Best of luck

Well Put Jon
In the west where i operate the normal price for a full Aerial rig is around £150.00 The same as for FreeSat Although some charge way beyond that.
For that off us all mounts are fully galvanized, not painted, masts are min 16g, Aerials Bench marked or top notch spec, All down leads are Tx100 we dont stock any lower standard, Where chimmney fixings are required we use proper lashing assemblys where possable, not wall brackets'' Are parts are mainly Triax, Labgear, ABC. All are work carries a 2 years parts and labour cover.
Im sure you will all agree thats good value for money from a very old established business.

Kind regards

Parts for a full TV aerial £45
Fully covered company insurance £185 a year
Vehicle insurance £425 Road Tax £225
Ladders 3sets approx £400
Drill £185

Oh I know I'll go & install aerials for £55 a go???????

At what point do I get to make a living???

The question at the top of this thread "beggars belief". Who in their right mind would do a quality install to make nothing.

You get what you pay for. If you can get someone to do it for nothing best of luck. Otherwise get a grip on reality. - I'm sure you getting paid when you go to work. Well if you work.
