Sonia Harvey: Was this a new box, or bought second-hand? If it was second-hand, check that it's not on the list of incompatible equipment at http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/2kequipment .

Do all the TVs (and the box) connect to the same aerial? If so, is the non-working box on a much longer cable than the others? Are the remaining analogue channels clear, or are they snowy, or any patterning on-screen?

Does the Freeview box work if you connect it to one of the other TVs, and does one of the other TVs work in the location that doesn't work?

Multi-room installations are harder to give simple answers to - it probably needs the attention of a professional to figure out what needs to be done. (RG47SH)

hi Mike, yes all tv are connected to the same aerial, the tv that is not working is the closest the the aerial and had more available freeview channels before the first part of the switchover yesterday, he does still have the analog channels and they are snowy but always were. the box is a new one not second hand and no i have not tried another telly in there, but do have a spare freeview box so may try that in there. my son did state a couple of weeks ago that he had a message come up on analog to state that switch over was in September could he be tuned in to a differnt area even though he is on the same aerial? also his telly is old would this have something to do with it or not as the freeview box is new?

Hmm. If it's the shortest distance it could be a problem of too much signal, though the predictor suggests that you weren't expected to get reliable signals before switchover.

Messages on analogue are shown before switchover, but only for about two weeks before the actual switchover date for the transmitter you're watching. I've not heard of any messages longer in advance than that, unless it was an advert from Digital UK (which I would hope was broadcast from the correct transmitter only!)

Of the three main transmitters that you might be watching, Sandy Heath has just started switchover, Sutton Coldfield changes at the start of September and Oxford a week after that. You should get best results from Sandy Heath when switchover is complete, but Oxford may have provided stronger signals before yesterday.

Some boxes store whichever version of the channels they find first, rather than the strongest found. Of these transmitters, Oxford is on the lowest frequencies. It's worth checking to see if there's another copy of the BBC channels at channel 800, and if they work better. If so, see the Digital Region Overlap section for ideas.

Final thought: you have to do a complete wipe of all channels and a full retune from scratch. See TV Re-tune for advice on how to do this for this box. It's possible that the box still has some stored information from the old frequency and is not storing the new information because it clashes. (RG47SH)

Hi Mike, thanks for all your help i have got it sorted now, i was not able to delete all channels as no option for this and the link to retune, gave me information for another box on the download part. i have used our spare freeview box and have retuned and now have bbc1 and 2 as well as itv1 and channel 4, finger crossed when retuning in a couple of weeks it all goes ok as no other spare box. Again thanks for you help, i would not have thought about trying another box to see if it worked.

Hi. I have re-tuned 2 TV's with built in freeview. 1 of them doesn't want to find itv or c4 (tv is a UMC 216/17F), the other is a different make and is ok (although missing a few other channels later on). I used the same ariel for both (just swapped the cable between the 2), which is an indoor ariel, technika TT-702.
Do you think i need a better ariel? If so, can you recommend one?
Postcode = SG8 7DN. Nearest transmitter is Sandy Heath.
Thanks in advance

Andy: Indoor aerials aren't expected to work well for digital reception. There's just too much attenuation - the signal doesn't travel well through walls, and below roof level, it generally has to travel through neighbouring buildings as well as your own walls. As you're very close to the transmitter, it may work well enough some of the time, but not all the time.

Still, you might as well wait a couple of weeks and see what happens when the power is turned up on the other multiplexes.

Different boxes do have different sensitivity, so sometimes one box will see more channels than another when signals are marginal. If the signals are at this sort of level, you'll probably find that channels are unreliable, constantly breaking up.

For best results it's normally recommended to use a roof-top aerial, with enough clear space around it to avoid reflections from metalwork and other hard surfaces. Using a similar aerial in the loft is next-best, but still usually leads to less good results. Indoor aerials usually pay more attention to aesthetics - what it looks like - and less to the actual functioning of the device.

You're close enough to the transmitter that if you do get an outdoor aerial, it should be a really small one! It might even be necessary to add attenuation to keep the levels below the point where they would overload the tuner.

Justin Smith of AerialsAndTV.com has spent a fair bit of time researching the performance of the aerials he sells. If you do want to stick with an indoor aerial, or have no choice, it might be worth looking at his site: Online TV FM DAB Aerial sales (RG47SH)

Just thought I'd see what I can receive on analogue on Ch.21 now that the old digital MUX1 from The Wrekin has been switched off today and I'm getting a poor analogue Channel 4, presumably from Fenton. Not receiving anything on analogue ch.39 where digital multiplex MUX1 The Wrekin B used to transmit on as there are no analogue transmissions on 39 anywhere near me.

Hi,

Can somebody tell me how I go about getting STV as opposed to ITV on freeview? I have tried to manually re-tune but there is no option for manual re-tune. I live in Melrose and have seen that the Gala transmitter transmits STV but i dont know if im picking up a different transmitter?

Many Thanks,
