BBC Red button video now on Freesat

The BBC "interactive" videos, which can be found on Sky and Freeview, can now be watched on Freesat.

Freesat launched in May 2008.

The service has all of the BBC services that Freeview and Sky viewers have, but with a few exceptions.

Because the satellite interactive video streams were on a Sky encrypted managed transponder, Freesat viewers only had the text interactive service.

From today, the BBC now provides the video streams for interactive sporting and entertainment events.

They can be found by tuning to a BBC television channel on Freesat and pressing the red button on the remote.

Thankfully, my Red Button sports multiscreen just so happened to start working again about a week and a half ago, just in time for the Canadian F1 weekend. No idea what happened, I didn't do anything, it just started working again. Maybe someone pulled a wire out somewhere, or something.

Hope everyone else's starts working again asap, if it hasn't already!

Alex

Well the USB 'upgrade' turned out to be the same version that was already on my t.v., so the t.v. is now away with the service engineers for repair. The engineer said that he had not come across this problem before and asked if he could have my print of this thread for reference! Oh well. time will tell if they get to the bottom of it and I'll let you know how I get on.

Bob: Red Button streams are up at 11954 MHz, on Astra 2B rather than 2D where all of the BBC's main channels live. It's possible that something was blocking the 22 kHz tone that the TV sends to the LNB to tell it to switch to the upper band.

If you are feeding the TV from another satellite box's 'LNB OUT', the other box will have control over the high/low and horizontal/vertical selection signals if it's on rather than in standby, or for recorders it may take control if recording two channels at once. If you have split the cable feed from the LNB to more than one box, either only one leg of the splitter will allow the control signals to pass up to the LNB, or if both boxes are on at the same time, the LNB can get confusing signals. Ideally you would run separate cables to separate outputs on the LNB for each input on each box or TV.

If you have some DiSeqC equipment, it may be blocking some of the selection signals, as it uses the same features. The TV might have a normal/DiSeqC selection mode - you might have selected the wrong mode. DiSeqC sends 22 kHz pulses for selection of different dishes, while the LNB requires a constant tone.

Of course it could simply be that the LNB's 22 kHz tone detector has failed, or the tone generator in the TV has failed.

Thanks, Mike Dimmick, for these comments. However, my t.v. (Sony 32w5810) has Freesat built in and is fed directly from the dish, with no additional equipment fitted, or cables split. The Sport Multiscreen function simply stopped working. I 'phoned the repairers and they have a new motherboard on order for it, so presumably they could'nt get it to work either when they tried at their test bench?

Can't get a new BA board. t.v. returned unrepaired, refund given by M&S. I've gone for a LG t.v. with a Humax box. Oh well, so much for Sony..........!
