2 million Freesat customers
According to the Guardian, "Freesat has passed the 2 million customer mark".
Also of note is this claim:
"Freesat's customer research claims that "a record 47% of its customers have come from Sky households so far in 2011". The company added that it is continuing to see a "steady increase" in Sky defectors over time.
In addition:
Freesat says gross retail sales are almost ã1bn and it is the fastest-growing UK television platform.
"We launched three years ago and in that short time have quickly established ourselves as a real challenger and genuine alternative to pay-TV," said the Freesat managing director, Emma Scott.

Freesat has become popular in Ireland as well.People are realising that you do not have to pay a subscription to Sky to receive a wide range of channels, public service, news, film channels, lots of radio stations as well.I have discovered from doing installions that the Sky type dish is more reliable.People who bought satellite systems in Lidl or Aldi solid grey dish. There has been problems in balancing alignment for vertical and horizantal polarity to recive full range of channels satisfactorily.

How many of these are just decoders bought as compared to decoders that are inbuilt into new TV's?
I don't think that freesat is a real challenger to SKY people are being forced to look for a cheaper way of watching TV in these harder times. SKY have been quite successful in keeping away any quality choice from freesat. It could have potentially been much more than it actually is.(there isn't the 200+ channels as promised at launch)
Compare the channel line up of freesat and freeview on this site, its mostly identical, both have the same big five channels as well as the extra digital ones. Both have an equal amount of poor quality shopping and foreign news channels.
Freesat should at least have more HD channels like ITV2HD etc and more variety in music, documentries and childrens TV. If some of the exclusive channels could be prised away from SKY like cartoonetwork, Discovery, Eurosport or MTV then that might cause SKY some concern.

Its a shame there are not more free HD channels on Freesat, instead of the same four that are on Freeview. This would give Sky something to think about.
With all the money pumped into BBC for conversion to hi-def digital over the years, seemingly wasted on putting up new buildings and relocation costs, they should be ashamed that their four main BBC channels 1 to 4 are not broadcast in HD across all platforms.
This should have been done by Act of Parliament and not left to the whims of highly paid executives who seemingly couldn't find their own highly padded backsides with both hands in a darkened room.
Total failure and incompetence from an organisation that has lost the plot.

Am I alone in noticing that Humax FOXSAT-HDR boxes do not seem to support subtitles on ITV1HD channel 119 - is there something different about the transmission mode? No other stations exhibit this shortcoming .

Ian Smith: ITV don't provide them, I think that is the reason...
