Analogue and digital signal strength

The strength of an analogue signal is no guide to the strength of a digital signal

The strength of an analogue signal is no guide to the strength
published on UK Free TV

Many people ask why they can receive an OK analogue picture, but need to upgrade their aerial to get Freeview, or sometimes get perfect Freeview reception when the analogue picture is very poor.

The digital signals are currently broadcast at low power (this will change as switchover happens) to prevent interference with the existing analogue signals. Thankfully most Freeview boxes can work with these weak signals. The following list shows the strength of the digital signal compared to the analogue for the 80 Freeview transmitters.

Sheena: Only a post code will give an answer, as Edinburgh can receive Freeview from either Craigkelly, Blackhill or a local Cannongate transmitter, that said though parts of Edinburgh can be quite iffy for reception no matter where its from, even with an outside aerial.

My post code is TN36 4BS.
I receive my Digital/analogue signal from Dover.
My aerial has been upgraded and I am using a multi 6way booster.
Intermittently loose mainly BBC digital signals. Analogue good to poor. Mainly in the evenings.
Any ideas.

lisa steward: At only 15 miles from the Oxford transmitter you should be getting a really good signal, unless that is you are in some form of dip or in any other type of circumstances where signal path obstruction exists.

ITV1 is on exactly the same power as the BBC, and if EPG3 isn't being shown carry out a manual tune on Mux Ch60 (ITV1) to see what comes up.

If nothing transpires on that test, "if" you have any booster fitted to your aerial try another test after removing it, this just in case ITV1 is being received at a level which is tipping the balance of overloading your
TV's tuner, although I do have doubts as to whether or not it will be in your case.
