Digital switch-over problems
The Sutton Coldfield transmitter that serves Birmingham is having all the current analogue and digital services moved to a second temporary mast. This work was due to be completed last month, but the bad weather has not allowed the "air work" to be completed quickly.
With the power level reported to be about an eighth of normal, this has caused many people reception problems in second largest city in England.
Despite being close to the first digital switch-over in Whitehaven, it seems that people using the Bleach Green transmitter are unable to scan for Freeview services. However, they do work if the viewer manually tunes their box toC53, C57 and C60. "Digital UK says they are now working with Ofcom and the broadcasters to fix the problem".
Down in Cornwall, the Redruth transmitter is stuck in limbo. Cornish people can now watch digital TV from the transmitter and relays, but the commerical multiplexes are on the old power levels and old frequencies until 30 September 2009.
It would appear that the 30 September Freeview retune will be an important date nationwide.

Yvonne: Re: Post code, there is absolutely no danger of that, as you haven't given it!
Also, its impossible to give any form of helpful advice regarding your upstairs TV's problem, as you haven't mentioned anything about how these TV's are connected to the aerial system used by the downstairs TV that you say is working fine after a re-tune.
Haven't you done the same with these upstairs TV's?

I live in sheltered accommodation and I have Sky - so luckily no problems for me.
However, most of my neighbours do not and are connected via an old aerial which provides a signal for 28 flats and about 50 houses.
Since the latest version of the switch-over my neighbours have experienced short periods of faulty 'picture' and/or 'sound' - what is the likely cause?

Alan Robinson: If they had reliable reception before switchover, the signal levels could now be too high.
The communal system probably needs adjusting to ensure that the levels on each channel are correct. It might even need replacing if it's particularly old.
See PARAS - Professional Aerial Riggers Against The Sharks for advice on who to contact.

I am witing on behalf of my father who has just bough a HUMAX PVR recorder so that he can continue to record programmes. However there is a problem. When my dad watches the tv without the box on the channels all work fine. However once the HUMAX box is one and he watches tv through this, the programmes freeze and its not watchable. We returned the box and got another but its the same problem. HELP - it has me screaming.

Kay Farmer: Humax boxes have sensitive tuners, and so are amongst the best around for "not" suffering from this problem in the same way as does some other equipment.
No location (post code) has been given and so your fathers reception possibilities cannot be checked on, this to give an idea of the signal strength he is liable to be receiving, and of course from where!
The other point is the method being used to feed the aerial into both devices, and also where the aerial is installed. (loft / roof or communal)
Maybe you could also indicate the model number of the Humax in question, likewise the TV.
These things really have to be known in order to be able to assess what's liable be causing the problem.

I was able to receive terrestial and Freeview channels until recently when suddenly I couldn't access FilmFour. Yesterday, however, I couldn't get BBC2 or ITV (I watched 'Downton Abbey' on ITV+1 - excellent reception). Today, all I can get is BBC1, plus when I try to manually retune it freezes and won't do anything, so am without any services. My picture comes through a Daewoo DVD Recorder, which has Freeview incorporated. In addition, the set is now tuned into Yorkshire, rather than the Central region, although I was told that my transmitter is Waltham. Any suggestions as to how to deal with these various, irritating gremlins??
