What price for an aerial installation?
In responses to the guideline I posted about how much having a new aerial fitted should cost, Ian Grice posted: "£40-£50? Every aerial fitter I contacted wants at least £150+VAT considering you can get a class 3 aerial for under £10 and a class 2 for under £15 and cable is 40p a metre why are they charging so much for 30 minutes work?"
OK, for some places putting up a TV aerial is hard work, such as multi-story properties. As many people will simply be exchanging a Group A, B, C/D, E or K aerial for a wideband type, often without changing the supporting pole or cable, a high price cannot be justified.
I am concerned that some companies will exploit vulnerable groups (such as the elderly).
So, I what prices have you been quoted for aerial installations? What price have you paid for installation?
Do you know of any companies to avoid? Do you know of any companies that are good value for money?
Or do you work for a great aerial installation company?

ronnie: I am inclined to agree with you insomuch that's its a bit too coincidental that your reception stopped at the very same time as Sky was being installed in your block, cable being cut or distribution amp being switched off springing to mind!
Of course you should really make enquiries with others in your block to see if they also lost reception, as although they might well have Sky fitted, its not necessarily the case that they don't watch Freeview as well.
It would also have been of assistance to know your location (post code) for purposes of checking your reception possibilities.

i think anyone who reads back through this thread would now have a good idea of prices in their area. of course your mate down the road can do it cheaper because he hasnt got the overheads of running a business. i have been installing for over 20 years but what i now find is frustrating with all these rogue trader type tv programmes is that some customers will not listen when you try and give advice to help them, they assume you are not being honest. i had a guy last week who didnt want to know about a log periodic type aerial which would have given him great reception, he wanted a 48 element high gain one which someone else had told him he needed.we did it his way but had a few channels missing due to signal overload which we managed to sort out in the end but sometimes you just cant win

Hello everyone, I would be very grateful for any advice you could offer.
I have accessed tv on my computer via an old analogue arial but seem to have lost a lot of channels last year.
My daughter has now asked for a tv in her bedroom which has no aerial. If I purchase a new digital aerial then would I be able to run both of the same aerial and would this have much impact upon picture quality?
Alternatively would an aerial installed in my loft work?
I am sorry if my questions are silly but I would appreciate some advice prior to spending my cash

Elaine: There is no such thing as a "digital aerial" or an "analogue aerial". Aerials are designed to receive signals at particular frequencies or range or frequencies and what type of signals (analogue or digital) are doesn't matter. In some cases, new aerials are needed for digital reception, usually because the signals are outside of the frequency range that was previously used for analogue (and hence outside the aerial's frequency range).
Where a current aerial works and feeds one room, it is possible to split the cable using the appropriate device so as to supply two or more rooms.
It would be useful to know your current location (preferrably in the form of a full post code) so that the likelihood of reception may be checked upon.
What is the current aerial? Is it on the roof and what direction does it point in? You say that you have watched TV on your computer; do you not have a TV?

phil: I suspect that your dish is very slightly out of alignment in the horizontal plane and possibly requiring a very slight nudge to the left, that is when looking in the direction its facing from under / above it, as that problem can occur if the dish is the merest fraction biased in the other direction, and I am meaning merest!

Pat: I would first see What can I do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' or 'Technical fault'? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice - loft aerials are not suitable for reliable Freeview reception.

Pat - Brian is to loft aerials as Muslim fundamentalists are to cartoons of the Prophet(PBUH). But they CAN be fine if the signal is good.
If you plug in your postcode top right you will get - or people here can provide, an indication of how strong a signal you have
