Freeview intermittent interference
There are several different types of interference that cause problems. This page deals with the situation where:
- Freeview reception is perfect or near-perfect most of the time
- The audio on TV and radio channels mutes momentarily a few times each minute
- The picture on a Freeview channel freezes a few times each minute
There are two main causes of this type of intermittent interference:
- 'Induction' interference
- Mobile phone interference
Induction interference
Induction interference is caused by mains-powered household devices that contain a large motor, such as:- Washing machine;
- Tumble dryer;
- Central heating pump or combination boiler;
- Fridge;
- Freezer;
- Power tools (drills, jigsaws etc)
- Vacuum cleaners;
- Water pumps;
- Automatic doors
You can identify if one or more of these devices is causing the Freeview reception problem by powering off the devices.
If one of these devices is causing the problem, then the reception problem can usually be solved by using a mains filter device and use it on the Freeview boxes mains connection.
Such as device is this: Maplin: 6-Way Flat Screen and HDTV Surge Protector and Mains Filter.
Mobile phone interference
If you keep a mobile phone by your Freeview box or digital television, keep it further away!This also applies to other transmitters such as baby monitors, video senders, walkie talkies, and portable phones.

I have recently bought a Freeview TV. Plugged it into my standard aerial socket and was perfect for about 2 weeks. Now it breaks up occasionally and a couple of times have had no signal at all. I am within the Crystal Place transmitter and only have the 1 TV connected to the aerial. But the strange bit is that it worked ok to start with. Any ideas

Sharon: Its just something that you will unfortunately have to put up with for the time being as many are in the same boat as yourself, this due to a combination of engineering work taking place at the transmitter coupled to possible problems caused by atmospheric conditions, come April 18th when the station goes over to high power operation these problems should vanish.

Been having Freeview problems for the last few weeks. Picture freezing and breaking up.
Signal strength approx 75%. Loft arial install. Has been ok up until recent high winds in January. Served by the Craigkelly tranmitter, any issue with the transmitter.
Started with losing the BBC1 stuff and then receiving 5* and a bunch of channels I never got before.
Have tried a diferent box and checked out all the cabling even tweeked arial position but no joy. Getting fed up with it.

We got a new LED Sony tv with built in freview and have a lot of interference with C4, More4, ITV 1 and a few other channels. It comes and goes and drives me mad. Post code BT28. we have had an aerial for years and a loft one fitted also.
Having read the above posts i'm more confused than ever. My problem sounds like Keith first post 26th Nov. 2011.
Is there anything we can do, or do we just live with this?

I live at m21 8dz Manchester, and we get our signal from Winter Hill. I have built in freeview Panasonic HD set. I have lost all my HD channels 3-4 weeks ago, but get all other channels no problem. I've tried retuning but can still not pick up the HD channels much to my frustration. As an aside I have a card to pick up ESPN via top up TV inserted in the set in case that's relevant. Can anyone help? - we want to watch the 6 Nations rugby in HD!

Paul Johnston: This could have happened if your TV was re-tuned whilst there was possibly a glitch at the transmitter on its HD mux, as the TV has possibly picked up signals from other than Winter Hill that doesn't transmit HD.
First of all carry out a factory reset or maybe called "default setting" on your TV, then follow this with an auto-tune, if HD returns good and well, but if not carry out another reset as before but do "not" follow it by an auto-tune, go into the tuning menu / manual tune and enter Ch54 (Winter Hills HD) then press search, if all is in order the HD channels should return, then recover the remaining muxes using the "update channel list" facility.

I have retuned again via autotune and am now picking up HD at channel numbers 800 - 804. They previously came at channels 50-54. Reception is slightly ropey. Any one know if these are coming via Winter Hill or somewhere else?
