I am having a problem with BBC Radios 1,2,3 and 4 on DAB having very distorted sound quality. It has only just started doing this at 11.15am this morning 25/09/12. Been working great upto now. I live in the BD6 area of Bradford on high ground looking towards Emley Moor transmitter. BBC Radio Leeds is fine and so are some other stations but not the main BBC Radio stations. Any comments please?

James gregory: According to the BBC reception status for your postcode there is already coverage in Clacton from Mendlesham, Manningtree and Wrotham. This refers to the BBC national multiplex. If you are referring to the proposed local mux, which will carry BBC Suffolk, there does not appear to be a date yet for its introduction.

Clacton-on-Sea is in Essex, not Suffolk.

There is a proposed relay transmitter for the Now Essex multiplex for Clacton, due in the next few years.

I would say it is not an improvement in Local Radio quality on DAB that we need, but a vast improvement in DAB bit rate & quality on National Radio in order to make DAB more attractive and to sell more radios and encourage DAB in cars. Someone at the BBC is still choosing whether the extra sports broadcasts on BBC 5 Live sports Extra means that he either he/she reduces BBC Radio 4 DAB to 80kbps and plunges it from (((STEREO))) to mono, or reduces the posh boys' Radio 3 DAB from their elite 192 kbps to 160 kbps (the same as Classic FM : DAB, which seems like a misnomer). Luckily, from my point of view, for the first time this year Radio 4 has won the bit rate battle and is in (((STEREO))) on a Friday night. So ANY QUESTIONS & THE FRIDAY PLAY were both in (((STEREO))) with 128kbps YIPPPPEEEEEE!!!

Friends, you will hopefully have heeded the high-profile BBC radio "commercial" extolling the virtues of DAB. Auntie always knows best. Bring on legislation to extirpate other-thinking in all media! Recent floods highlight the importance of local radio - which has been more up-to-date and accurate than official websites. In many valleys and coastal areas, local radio is not reliable on FM, even less so on DAB. So analog Medium Wave local radio should be preserved until total coverage is otherwise incontrovertibly provenly guaranteed. Unless,
of course, company profits and fat-cat bonuses are more important
than public service.

Why are the BBC allowed to put out promtional material on both TV & Radio, especially Radio 4 (featuring DOCTOR LOVE) implying that BBC DAB radio gives better sound quality, when it patently does not, especially now the BBC have chosen to put Radio 4 into mono most evenings on DAB (last Friday being a one-off, it would appear).

They can't have it both ways, on the one hand writing to me saying it is up to them how they choose to distribute their capacity, but then telling fibs to the national public regarding the sound quality. I wouldn't care but an OfCom spokesperson told me last week that if the BBC need extra capacity on DAB, they only have to ask for it (and presumably pay for it). If the BBC are spending so much money on new DAB transmitters, surely they can put up the cash for another full or at least part Multiplex to give all their DAB channels a decent sound quality and at the very least allow BBC Radios 4 & 4 Extra enough bits to broadcast in (((STEREO))) 24/7. Thjis will encourage more people to buy the new technology. I note most BBC Radio Local stations have a higher bit rate than BBC Radios 4 & 4 Extra.

Criminal !!

This whole DAB roll out has not been thought through at all well.

I don't see how BBC DAB radio will ever get into all the nooks and crannies that LW, AM & FM does, ever !! Esapecially the Scottish, Welsh and Lake Districr crannies (and nooks).

Nedbod : I agree. It would appear there will be some improvement of DAB cover, if not of bitrates, but nowhere near that of FM or AM. Local BBC radio on DAB is unlikely to ever cover all low-lying areas as does AM. But, never fear, the profit-margin maximisers have come up with a cunning plan. Television could be squashed into the 500 and 600MHz segments (don't tell'em yet they might need new boxes and aerials), leaving all of the juicy 700 and 800MHz chunks for, yes, 4G and beyond. So for a fat subscription, I shall be empowered to receive local radio on my expensive-hence-yet-to-be-acquired i-thingy. Whoopee!----- Oh dear, I just remembered: we don't not get no mobile signal 'ere...
