Brandon: where abouts are you? We live just outside Newry and our signal has been breaking up on some channels for days. I have tried returning and ended up losing loads of channels, including bbc 1 +2 - the ones that get the licence fee!! Re-tuned today - still only 28 tv channels - used to be dozens, all with perfect reception! How do we find out what's happening?

Brandon: If you've lost all reception on all three TV's (and they are linked by the same aerial), then your aerial is the problem! Check the connections to where it splits. If there is a problem with reception, we need a postcode...

chris white: If you turned it off every night, not a lot would happen, but thats actually a problem.
The Humax (like very PVR) is designed to be left on standby - it does it automatically. It uses very little power, and will not overheat, explode, etc.
If you switch it off every night, you will miss out on any updates, software patches, etc which are uploaded in the night (they often do this, because its a quiet time).
Secondly, you miss out on one of its key features - the ability to record when your not watching! If you switch off the recorder when you go to bed, it cannot record the thing which you set to record at midnight. Since a lot of programmes are on plus 1, or repeated at night (which you might record then to avoid a clash), your not getting your full moneys worth if you switch off at the mains.
I switch off the TV and the DVD player at night (they are on one socket). The other socket/gang has the PVR and the broadband hub, and just gets left on.
I get a fair number of customers who do switch off their PVR at night, including one man who would not only switch off the internet hub, but actually take the socket out of the wall! However, there is no need to worry, and the box should be left on, it will go into standby mode quite naturally.

Modern equipment is designed to have a very, very low power consumption when in standby mode. Much of the 'information' given out by non-manufacturing sources is actually incorrect. Sky boxes are designed to use less than 1 Watt in standby for example.
As MikeB states, PVRs, etc are designed to be left plugged in and operable all the time, even if they automatically or manually drop into standby mode.
Leave it running in standby so you get the benefits at very little cost.

Chris White, MikeB, Mike P-Can I just ask for a little more depth here ?
Is it only at night for updates ?
I tell older folks that, If they want, Turn of at the plug when they go to bed but put the box back on standby in the morning even if they do not intend to watch TV, I also say the same fpr Freeviw boxes and TV's as they search for updates in standby mode.
Can these updates be missed and never have a chance of getting back?
If the box has an auto update option in its menu, is this the same thing?
Many Thanks

I live in northern Italy. I'm inheriting a dish (not sure what size). I want to be able to get and record UK regional channels BBC NI Wales ALBA etc. Can I get freesat and in particular the regional channels easily and what box would you recommend to record programmes onto? I've only heard of Humax? Would a second hand sky box work?
