Using Sky without a card? Let's call that Sky No Card
Brian Butterworth published on UK Free TV I have made a change to the name used for the service provided by a Sky box and no viewing card.
This was called fSfS on UK Free TV. You can get this service still - from:
FREESAT from Sky - Call now to order for £175.
However, the name is a little confusing, because there is also the service freesat:
freesat - Subscription free HD Satellite TV through a Digital Box.
So, to make things clearer, the Sky service is now called "Sky No Card" on UK Free TV, and the other service "Freesat".

Are you going to have another genre called, say, Sky Old card to take account of those who use and old Sky box but also have (and use) an old card to give them regionalisation on 101 and 103?

Hi,Ive recently cancelled my subscription with Sky and have 2 Sky +HD boxes (multiroom ).Can i still use these for all the freesat channels including the free HD channels, and will i be able to use the recording facility or will i need to purchase a new freesat receiver with built in recorder. Will i need to purchase a freesat viewing card from Sky

martin redfern: The boxes referred to will still operate on free to view channels although the recording side of same will have been disabled by Sky.
You could of course retain the ability to record the free HD channels by taking out a new subscription at a cost of approximately £10.50 per month for the dubious privilege of being able to do so, as that's all that the subscription covers and not the viewing of Sky package channels.
Its really up to yourself, but many choose to ditch Sky and purchase a Freesat PVR such as a Humax twin tuner recorder like the types seen on the attached link, these devices offering choices of either 500Gb or 1TB hard drives.

Jan: Yes! and in exactly the same way as you do with Sky, because as far as reception is concerned technically there is no difference between them.

old sky hardware with an old (Expired) or Freesat from Sky card is still relevant to some. I dont subscribe to sky, and have no interest in doing so, but for £5 for an old Sky box on ebay (which still had the card in) I can now decode Motors TV which is a free, yet encrypted channel. (as is liverpool TV)
slightly annoying that Motors isn't free to air, but as long as this, and a few other free channels remain encrypted, this setup remains relevant to some.
Unsure why this arrangement exists, as presumably motors TV pay Sky to encrypt this channel, yet dont receive revenue from Sky as the channel isn't included in any Sky package? Confusing.

The reason certain free-to-view channels are only available on Sky card access is to protect programme rights, especially if on a European Astra 2 beam.

So if I get a fsfs card I will b able to see motors TV but my box is not HD or 3D its just an old white DVB that lights sky up in the center as I can't view motors TV at the min as no card at the min

chris woods: Motors TV can be viewed on any normal (SD) Sky box on guide number 447 fitted with a standard non subscription card of the type mentioned, the HD qualification only applying to reception on Freeview due to the programme being transmitted on the COM7 multiplex which is an HD transmitter.
