Can I use my digital freeview box abroad and receive English channals?
No. You cannot receive signals from UK Freeview transmitters abroad. You box will be able to receive local "DVB-T" transmittions, if there are any.
You can use satellite equipment pointing at the Astra 2D satellite from some European countries however to get around 100 UK free-to-air channels.

sudeshbunger: in brussels you'll need a 60-70cm satellite dishantenna aligned with the astra 2 satellites/eutelsat 28a satellites @ 28.2degE hooked up to a uk freesat receiver, secondhand sky hd receiver or generic free to air satellite receiver. Sky + recording and playback only via subscription in the UK only. A freesat box or freesat+ recorder or generic free to air satellite box with pvr facility would be best for you. Astra2 and eutelsat28a carry english language uk channels.

Freesat boxes can be bought in the uk or online ie ebay. Generic free to air satellite receivers can be bought quite generally from most satellite dealers.

Your dish should be installed professionally to get the best results.
It should be aligned to 'see' the satelites that are immediately above the 28 degrees longitude over the Equator. That means the diesh will need to be aimed at and angle greater than 28 degrees east of due south - the actual angle and elevation has to be calculated for the precise location. There are website that offer this serfvice for you.

Hi, what would be in your view the dish size required for Geneva?
Thank you!

Anthony: I would suggest a 90cm-100cm dish for Freesat in Geneva the signal strength tends to weaken the further south you go and the reception results can vary enormously across Europe even as short as a few miles in the next town village region or country-go for a 90cm dish bare minimum at 28degrees East but if you want total rainfade free reception I'd suggest 100cm diameter dish at maximum.

English In Swiss. The dish needs to be aimed at where the satellites are positioned in orbit. They are geostationary above a point 28.2 degrees east of due south and directly above the Equator. That means they are somewhere above equatorial East Africa. The actual aim, the azimuth and elevation plus the LNB skew, needs to be determined for your specific location. There are on-line systems that can help with the rather complex calculations, such as that at Calculate Azimuth And Elevation Angles which can give you the required aiming information. You may need to check whether there are any legal requirements about erecting a dish of the size needed. In the UK there are restrictions on the maximum size and its location on a building. Your local planning regulations may have some advice, else speak to the governing authorities for the locality to ensure you are not contravening any requirements with such a large dish.

I have lost all my British tv channels in Innsbruck Austria. Can get some during
the day strangely enough. Nothing in the evening. I have a sat dish.
If I bring a British Freeview receiver would that help? Or how do I simply
restore all the channels without having to resort to internet services as I
simply want anyone to be able to sit down and switch on in an uncomplicated
way. If I bring a British Skybox for example. Will that still work??
Thanks.

C. Kennedy: Most services on the Astra satellite at 28.2 degrees east now use a tighter beam to serve the UK only with small dishes. This mainly affects the BBC, ITV, Ch4, Ch5 channels and you will now need a large dish to get these. Difficult to estimate exactly what size as the data from SES-Astra is sketchy but you could need 1.5 to 2 metres diameter. It will not matter what make of satellite receiver you use, it's all to do with the dish size. Some of the lesser important channels still use beams that cover Innsbruck and if you are having problems with them then you must be using a dish that is too small. A Freeview receiver using an ordinary UHF antenna will only find the local Austrian channels from the ORF Patscherkofel transmitter near Innsbruck. http://de.wikipedia.org/w…fel.

C Kennedy-you'll need at least a 2m dish to get as many services as you can;signal strengths will vary on the Astra 2 UK spotbeam channels but you will get a lot of the Astra 2 pan-european beam free to air services down there in Innsbruck on a 2mtr dish antenna aligned with 28.2degE.

A British Freeview receiver will not be able to get any British Freeview programmes in Innsbruck. That is just far too far away from the UK for any of the transmissions to get that far.
You may get some British programmes on FreeSat using your dish, but it needs to be pretty large as Innsbruck is some way outside the targetted area so the signals will be pretty weak.
