Is there any meaningful reason why Channel 4 should not be sold off? After all it is a commercially financed channel and as such should be subject to the laws of the market place. The government can still ensure that it sticks to its remit and providing different and subjective matter to the rest of the commercial sector but in order for that to happen it does not necessarily have to retain ownership.

Nick Anderson: No there is no real reason why the Government should not divest itself of ownership of Channel 4. As you quite rightly point out Nick, the Government could put in place some 'covenant' type restrictions on the new owners to ensure that they continued to stick to its remit.
It is interesting to see that one suggestion for a future for Channel 4 might be as an employee owned 'mutual' style organisation. That may be preferable to selling it.
I doubt the Tories will win an overall majority at the next election though. So it may not happen.
