20 Freeview HD TV channels to close March/June 2019 in Cornwall

Beacon Hill will stop transmitting the channels to Torbay at the end of March, with the rest of Cornwall they will stop from 19 June 2019. These channels are on the so-called com7 and com8 multiplexes, which are being withdrawn from Cornwall. This is ahead of the rest of the UK where the licence expires May 2020.

The following TV channels will stop being broadcast on Freeview in Cornwall

This is because the com7 and com8 services will stop broadcasting from:

The Redruth transmitter didn’t carry com7 and com8.   Viewers in Ivybridge will get the com4, com5 and com6 from 10 April 2019.

Homes in Cornwall who want to watch these channels will find most of them on Freesat

The following PSB3 Freeview HD channels will continue:

I understand that com7 and com8 will be removed from UK-wide broadcast as soon as the 5G mobile phone services start, which could be as early as  21 June 2020.

However, until the mobile broadband companies actually need the frequencies for the "5G Supplemental Downlink" (MCFN-SDL) service, com7 and com8 are expected to continue on a month-by-month license.    See Ofcom: Award of the 700 MHz and 3.6-3.8 GHz spectrum bands

Not exactly channels anyway with many pointless +1's. Such a waste of spectrum. So we will just get the main 5 channels in HD forever then I guess...

More 4+1 on PSB3 why ? That should carry BBC News HD surely. What a complete mess Freeview is, much like DAB

Dave: The "More 4+1" channel is using about 1/3rd of the capacity of a HD channel, and is fitting into a (relatiy) tiny amount of space. There isn't room for another full HD channel on PSB3.

BBC1 HD and BBC2 HD has already stopped broadcasting in Cornwall. Fortunately I don't watch much TV in summer, so lets hope it gets fixed before the nights get longer again and the new BBC1 series "Earth Form Space" must be seen in HD. Going to FreeSat will involve felling a couple of trees, which may get me into trouble, but I'll have a good excuse. Isn't there any other way?
I doubt many people will take up 5G mobile phones anyway.

Marcus Parker-Rhodes: BBC1 HD and BBC2 HD have not ceased broadcasting from any transmitter in Cornwall or anywhere else, nor has there been any suggestion of those channels closing anywhere! You are either suffering from a fault or interference. If we knew which transmitter you're receiving we could check if there are any known problems (please provide a full postcode). You should check for any loose or damaged cables or connections behind your TV as it's quite likely that there may be a fault at your end somewhere.

What makes you think that 5G mobile services will have a low takeup? The telecoms industry clearly don't think so, otherwise they wouldn't be spending billions on building out 5G networks over the next few years.

Marcus Parker-Rhodes:
I don't get BBC1 HD, BBC2 HD & ITV HD. I've re-scanned for channels several times but those four are not found. Channel4 HD is OK but a little wobbly. All the rest, from numbers from 105 and higher are good.
My Post Code is PL32 9ST, village of Tresparrett. and the nearest (impressively tall) tower is by the village of Minions.

Marcus Parker-Rhodes: The Digital UK checker says that you should get a strong signal on all multiplexes from Caradon Hill. BBC1 HD, BBC2 HD, ITV HD, Channel 4 HD, Channel 5 HD & CBBC HD are all broadcast on the PSB3 multiplex, so if you get Channel 4 HD then you should certainly be getting the others. What signal strength and quality readings do you get on Channel 4 HD? It's possible that your TV may have picked up a weaker signal from Huntshaw cross, have you checked whether there are any duplicate channels in the 800 number range?

StevensOnln1: Thank you for your advice. I will make sure I'm getting my signal from Caradon Hill
and not Huntshaw Cross.
