Richard E: Before a tree came into foliage, I was able to see the german HD channels on Astra 1 at 19.2deg.east and one of them showed the re-mastered original series and it is clearly HD quality but then it was shot on film originally and film has always been 'HD'. The soundtrack was dubbed german of course.

MikeP: Original BSB used D-MAC which had time compressed analogue sequential video Y and C and digital sync and sound in a 64usec line so was a bit of a hybrid but was FM on a single carrier so was not really digital in the same way as current satellite multiplexes although digital processing on receive was necessary to construct a usable RGB full 64usec line. Didn't some scandinavian services use D2-MAC on Astra 1 years before BSB came on the scene.

MikeP: We've had this discussion before but your history of DTT services takes no account of the start of OnDigital in November 1998 serving 70% of the UK rising to greater than 90% in 2000. The only major change between then and DSO was that some of the multiplexes were regraded to 16QAM from 64QAM at the commencement of Freeview making the reception more robust at the enforced low power operation preventing interference to the analogue services. ITV and Ch4 retained 64QAM which did nothing for the reputation of DTT. This was hardly 'experimental' though and hardly a trial. On and Freeview were launched as full services. My first foray into DTT reception was around 2002 with an Hitachi IDTV 16:9 28" CRT receiving all the FTA DTT channels from Emley Moor.

Dave Lindsay - at 278degrees you seem to be around 5-6dB down on the main lobe of the ch56 mux but I don't think you are missing much as it seems all their content will be centred on happenings inside the Leeds ring road judging by the current promo'.

KMJ,Derby: TV sound has always been the poor relation and probably only had a performance peak during the colour CRT era when cabinets became necessarily large. The best sound I ever heard was on holiday in Germany from a Nordmende 26" set. The next was probably from a 1970 Philips K70 set I had which had a good side facing decent size loudspeaker AND a forward facing tweeter. It even had a tone control. It also had an extension speaker DIN socket which would allow both or extension only depending on orientation of the DIN plug. More recent sets were a Hitachi 28" 16:9 IDTV which had Dolby Prologic sound and extension speaker connections which died around 2006 replaced by a 32" LCD Mirai which was tolerable but my current Toshiba 40" has had to be relegated to display only as some of the female presenters at BBC Leeds were horribly sibilant and the sound in general was worse than the 60's table models. An AV amp has solved all sound problems.

P&P: BBC, ITV, Ch4 and Ch5 are using tight beams focussed on the UK and no exact reception prediction for spillover to Bavaria is given. If you know anyone in Bavaria with a 1.5 to 2 metre movable dish, ask them nicely to see if they can get any BBC1, ITV1, Ch4 from the Astra 2 satellites at 28.2 deg. East and that will be the size of dish you will need if they are successful. There are many channels(Sky News, Music, Shopping, Religious) on the satellites at 28.2 deg.East that cover Bavaria with similar power levels to the UK that will be receivable with a 75cm dish but the main public service channels are not among them.

Excitymouse: 240 is the internet streaming feed for Motors TV and not compatible with all Freeview equipment(!). The Motors TV broadcast service from COM7, which carries BBC News HD on 107 and you say you get OK, is on 71. You may need a manual retune on UHF Ch 31 to find it.

Keith :- I assume you mean re-tune rather than switchover which was the process of switching from analogue to digital TV some years ago now. My Humax PVR does the auto scan in two stages. The first stage only looks for DVB-T standard channels and then it restarts the scan looking for DVB-T2 channels which are the PSB3 and COM7 services. Did you accidently interrupt stage 2? Just an idea which nearly caught me out when I got my HD Humax PVR.
If you are manually scanning the single channels for PSB3 and COM7 don't forget to select DVB-T2 before you start the scan on each.

Briantist: It's a pity the links to FAQ's and to find out which SmartTV's are compatible just bring back a '403 forbidden' response.
