steve: I've got the older version of one of these boxes, and they are relatively sensitive (although they have the tendency to lock up every so often, at which point you need to pull the power and let it reboot), so I can figure why your not getting your HD channels, especially since your seemingly so close to Sandy Heath.

First thing is to check that its not your system, after a rescan and making sure its locked onto Sandy Heath. Try swapping out the aerial lead, and obviously check signal strength. If everything still looks OK but no HD, then ask if you can use your neighbours aerial for a minute - if you do a scan for channels and it picks up HD, its your aerial system (although you would probably have noticed that when looking at signal strength).

If nothing works, it sounds like the box is duff and take it back. My betting is that either something is really up the spout with your aerial system, and its just about hanging on, or, more likely, the box is shot.

Bob smith: Need a postcode, the supposed transmitter and signal strength. BTW - retuning makes things worse

Kevin Connor: You havn't given us a signal level or a postcode to work with, but it could be that even though everything looks ok, a dodgy cable is causing a problem with that multiplex, and the others are low but workable.

As Steven said, its almost certainly your system.

Graham Jones: Your just 31km from the transmitter (Black Hill) - so its unlikely to be a problem with you getting a signal.

Check the signal strength - is it too high or too low. A month ago you had a retune event, and it could be that signal levels have risen at that point, and now its a bit high on some muxes, hence the 'no signal', etc.

But if you signal levels are low, then its certainly your system - so check for frayed cables, loose connections, etc.

Annie: Although there can be unresolved or unrecognised technical issues, they tend to sorted out fairly quickly.

On the other hand, I have no idea what transmitter your using, what might between any of the people you've mentioned and the transmitter (are they using the correct one?), the state of their aerial systems, etc.

Put it this way - if only 1 out of a 1000 people are having a 'problem' with their TV reception (whatever that might actually mean), then in even a small catchment like a light transmitter of say 10k, thats 10 people have a problem - and you might have spoke to half of them.
Add stuff like weather, and there are lots of variables. But the chances are it their systems, and there probably isn't a common cause.

Winter Hill (Bolton, England) transmitter

Anthony powell: According to that postcode, you are just 6KM(!) from Winter Hill - which means you barely need an aerial at all!

Check your signal level, because its probably off the chart, and then look for 'too much of a good thing' on this website. I'm just surprised that whoever replaced the cabling on your chimney didn't mention high signal strength.

a w bates: I dont know anything about Sky, but I doubt it, since they dont allow you to watch what you've already recorded or record at all if you stop subscribing. Do Sky boxes actually do catchup in the way that you just use Iplayer, etc?

If you want ctachup on a TV, just get a streamer - Amazon Fire sticks, Ruku's, Chromecast or just Now TV (owned by Murdoch) will all do it relatively cheaply, and need no wires. Or a Blu ray player or games machine. Humax do a freesat receiver with catchup functions, as do Manhatten (but I dont think they are wified)

If you want to watch and record, plus catchup, then swap out you existing Sky box for a Humax Freesat box, which will do the lot and is an easy swapout - about one ninety plus for one.

paul denning: You very close to the transmitter, and MikeP rightly suggested too high a signal. Just because the signal has stopped breaking up does not mean its cured - it could just be that high pressure etc has pushed signal strength above the point where the tuner is happy. But its probably going to happen again.

paul denning: All I meant was that a very slight change would mean that your signal would change in a way that would be noticed - it could be any variable.

As MikeP says, get a load of attentuators - you can put them in series, to get the right level. 6km is very close to the transmitter, you've been lucky it hasn't happened before.
