dani242: Since the Midhurst transmitter seems to be fine, it sounds like the problem is at your end. Check that your system actually is working properly (a broken cable might be the problem), and also check (using your postcode in this website) that your best transmitter is Midhurst. You might be better for Hannington.

Joe Wale: Welcome to the wonderful wold of the Bush/Goodmans set-top box...

My bet is that your mum lives in the Waltham area, but her aerial sort of faces Belmont as well (this is my situation). The box does not do manual tuning, so when it looks for a transmitter, it will find the lowest Channel number first. Belmont is lower than Waltham, so thats the first one it finds.

Follow the instructions above, and clear the channels completely. Others on theis site then suggest leaving out the aerial lead for about the first 30% of the scan, and then sticking it in, and let the box find the right transmitter. At the end of the setup it will sometimes ask you to set the region - if its not on Waltham it makes no difference what you chose, your not getting East Midlands. Trial and error is your best method, and once it does say 'East Midlands' when you it tells you what transmitter its on, never ever retune it . It will update itself, so unless you are told to retune, just leave it alone.

As you can tell, I am delighted with my Goodmans box...

Lisa: Click on the 'L's R + T Investigation' link next to your question. Mendip and Stockland Hill transmitters seem fine, so your TV is telling you there is no signal getting to your TV. Logically, you've got a fault with your aerial system, probably due to a broken cable, connection, etc.

michael: If you want hissy AM, then thats fine. But if you want to listen to the World Service, you could just buy a cheap mobile phone and plug it into the radio - like the rest of us...

michael: I must admit I dont really listen to the radio in the car, I just plug in the Ipod. To be fair, when my wife is listening to her Ipod in the car, there is little difference between her favourite playlist and listening live to Heart FM, but thats life.

Elizabeth: If the Technika recorder has hdmi, then use that, becuase thats the best connection anyway.

I'm not familiar with Blaupunkt (OK, looked at one in Sainsbury's..), but I'd be surprised if its didn't have one. It might be RGB (and if it is, then life gets complex), but have a look at the manual, and give us the model number.

To be honest, niether brand will have a huge amounts of connections on it, but hopefully we'll find something that matches.

michael: Rightly, people should be careful not to be distracted by mobiles, etc whilst driving. And ROSPA and other bodies certainly say there is a great deal of research that mobiles are a distraction, even while using hands-free equipment.

However, I did find this webpage about the statistics of how distracted people actually are by mobile phones: Accident statistics , using data from Australia and the US. They (surprisingly) concluded that only in 0.9% of cases were mobile phones a cause of an accident, the same percentage due to 'Changing CD/cassette/radio'.

Frankly, fiddling about with a LW radio in your car trying to tune it in is a distraction, as is using your mobile to take or make a call. However, since modern mobiles will often allow you to use voice command to do many functions, and its just touching the app on the screen to bring up a station, it could be that streaming is no more dangerous than trying to find Radio 2 on FM.

Nick S: I take your point about plasma angles (although LED's are now very good as well), but I dont think its universal. Certainly the Samsung 8000 plasma we had on display until recently had terrible angle problems, even from closeup, but the Panasonic VT65 (the last of the line) is fantastic from any angle. Actually, its just fantastic, and we are sorry to see plasma go. With the end of plasma, great black levels are more difficult to find, but last years Sony W905 was very good, and I recommended it to people wanting to replace their Pioneers. I hear that OLED black levels are superb.

Looking at my 21in CRT, while I could watch it from 60 degrees, its no better or worse than an LED (which are viewable from 89 degrees - as people find out for themselves when they ask). I suspect that the idea that LCD's/LEDs have poor viewing angles might be based on their experience of TV's from perhaps 8 years ago. Certainly there are no real problems now, and really havn't been for the past 5 years.

Frankly, watching any TV from the wrong angle makes little sense, and is as logical as wanting to go to the theatre and being happy to pay for a restricted view when you have the choice.

Michael: Since I have the same Virgin package, I can assure you that your hub and your Freeview have nothing to do with each other, and it could just be that your unlucky in that your aerial has a problem the day after you got it!

However, there is one thing that does occur to me. Most Virgin broadband fibre tends to come in at the front of the house, and since this is likely to be the lounge for many, you might have your hub right next to the TV (mine is). In all the excitement of setting up the new phoneline/hub, etc, its possible to loosen the aerial leads from their sockets.
If you switched on the TVlast night, and got 'no signal', then the TV is telling you there is a problem with the aerial. Its quite possible that the aerial lead is loose in the socket, or has just dropped out. Have a look. If everything is fine, then check the rest of the system.

ROY: Its likely to be in the setup menu. Try googling for a Goodmans or Bush TV for around the time the TV cam out, because their onscreen menu will probably be pretty similar, and the manual wont differ much.
