I use Winter Hill and usually watch via my Humax, which is as normal, but when I switched to my TV yesterday for a child channel for our little grandson, it was all over the place and had Welsh channels. Do I have to do a tiresome manual retune now?

For some time, on my Humax DVR TV Guide (on which I only have 15 channels) channel 24 - ITV4 (which I rarely watched) shows only "Quest Red+1 is back at ...". What does this mean? I can see that ITV4 is still there on my Panasonic TV..

Full technical details of Freeview
Thursday 10 August 2017 11:20AM

I'm confused by the use of 'channel'. I and, I think, most people think of it as in 'Channel 4' but on this site it seems more often to mean something else. How am I supposed to understand which of the Channels 21 to 60 used by Freeview broadcast which of the Channels in the Channel 4 sense? I'm at M469PE (Winter Hill in line of sight) and for some reason ITV4 on the Humax (but not the TV) EPG has started to show 'Quest Red+1 is back ..' and I want to know how to correct it with the least effort. Some of the children's channels have also started to pixelate.
And I might as well ask here if it's normal to need several presses of the red button to bring up the text.

I have 12 channels on my Humax EPG: BBC, ITV 1/2, E/More/Film/4, 5 and Yesterday. For some time it has been showing only the BBC channels for a full week. Typically, eg on Monday morning, it will show all Tues and Wed and Thurs till just after midday, varying with channels, and then by late afternoon load into Friday. On the TV, everything is there. Any idea why this should be?
It's an inconvenience because we check a week's programming, clicking anything of likely interest and and only occasionally watching it live instead of the recording. I did a manual retune but, as I suspected, that had no effect.

Having problems with TV background music?
Tuesday 25 September 2018 11:22PM

What annoys me intensely is that over the last few years tv programme makers seem to have decided that factual programmes need 'enhancing' with 'background' music, which is utterly irritating and sometimes to the detriment of the clarity of the expert presenter's speech. People like D Attenborough never needed it, so why the change?
On the other hand, why, when programmes are recorded in noisy environments, where the noise/sound is merely incidental, why is the sound track not edited to diminish the noise and/or enhance the speech? Surely nowadays, the sound engineers can tweak the frequencies and volume any way they want.

This article is a waste of time, since it's impossible to work out what it means. I'm a highly educated polyglot and couldn't meaningfully translate this into any of the languages I know. If I translated exactly what is written, a reader of that text would assume the translator was fit for the job. This is clearly a computer-produced conversion of sound to writing and, if that's the best that can currently be done, we should use a human until the software improves vastly.

These transcripts are a bit pointless if they are not edited, by a human, so that they make sense.

I'm puzzled at how jumbled these transcripts are. I had assumed that by now the technology would pick up, transmit and convert speech much more precisely, especially, as here, when it's not confused by several participants butting in. I guess there'll be someone who can explain. Thanks.

Am I stupid or just wrong to assume that technology has existed for some time to turn speech pretty accurately into writing, esp if it's being fed into a microphone to be broadcast on the radio? If so, why are these BBC transcripts so hopelessly jumbled?

I am puzzled by these (largely incomprehensible to me) Podcast summaries. I'm 79 so am probably unfamiliar with today's technology, but I assumed they were recordings turned into text and I thought an 'intelligent' technology for doing that would provide a much more precise conversion.
