David Warner:

See the last but one paragraph on this BBC Blog.

IIRC there was a trial with some Freeview Play devices previously which were connected to the internet, where the automatic swap would take place. Your set may be one of the models which did this.
At present I can't find the link to that information, I'll post it later if I find it.

David Warner:

Haven't yet found the link about the original trial yet, it was done on CBBC and Cbeebies, but it's "Channel List Management" or CLM.

Mark:

Which way is your aerial pointing?

If it's pointing ~WNW with its rods (or squashed Xs) vertical, it's pointing at the Exeter St. Thomas relay transmitter which is Freeview "Light" and only has the PSBs.
If it's pointing at compass bearing 72 degrees ~ENE with its rods horizontal, it's pointing at the main Stockland Hill transmitter which has all 6 multiplexes. However, reception of the COM muxes is predicted to be (very) variable at your postcode.

Depending on when you last tuned/retuned, if it was in more adverse weather conditions, maybe when there was some tropospheric ducting causing interference from more distant transmitters (there's been some affecting parts of the SW & elsewhere off & on recently), the set may have missed the weaker (or non-existent) COM multiplex signals.

You are likely to need a high gain Group A or Group K aerial pointing at Stockland Hill to get the COMs

If you aerila is already pointing that way, Autotune can sometimes miss weaker signals so try a Manual tune on the following UHF channels - C25, C22, & C28 for CMs 4,5 & 6.
(The PSBs are C26, C23, C29).

Michael Murphy:

Sorry you are wrong with your assumption about "atmospherics", all 3 would not necessarily be affected. Tropospheric Ducting can be very frequency dependent and it will also depend on where the interference is coming from. A distant transmitter in Europe or the UK may not be co-channel on the same 3 UHF channels.

Frank Littleton:

I'm really not sure how you'd speak to all the members of the public in Europe, UK and some worldwide who voted.
If there was a specific aspect which may be an issue, that could be different matter.

I can only assume because of the additional complex frequency planning that would have been needed.
At DSO (already an expensive business) the new high power multiplexes in most cases just replaced the analogue transmissions on their allocated channels and no additional (or adjusted) frequency planning was needed.
I'd also guess that since DSO the additional data and experience with digital propagation would have helped tweak the computer models used for such planning.

Henry :

I can't find any listings of either planned engineering or faults, so I would assume that this is more than likely to be due to current weather conditions causing interference to signals.
There is currently quite variable Tropospheric Propagation with the high pressure weather system and current predictions show that Northern Ireland can be affected at the moment and again possibly next mid-week. You won't necessarily be affected all the time or necessarily find all multiplexes affected at any given time.

Are you still having the above issue or has it gone away?

You may find problems getting some/all channels on Channelbox to load (I know I'm not the only one who's had that issue).
You just have to keep trying, try one of the other channels first until something loads.
It's very odd behaviour.
