Chintan -- HI - the signal varies from area to area - you can guarantee electricity gas and water but aerial reception is another thing all together what Briantist says is quite correct we need a postcode to even begin to unravel what you can or cant get

Exactly - were not criticising the job anyone does - as long as they are competent at that job I have no idea how to re wire a house and have plenty of friends who are electricians - they call on me to do aerial work - the times a new electrician gets in touch i generally find its because they have screwed up thinking they can do the aerial side - I have helped numerous sparks out of the mire -- the next job they need help on they get me in at the beginning so screw ups are not made! - just typed "Electrician" into my address book - there are 17 that use me (well that I have stored their number in)

George - Whats astonished me is that The Home help leaflet that can be found in asda sainsburys etc states that an aerial should cost in the region of £60 to £185 - ive been self employed for 10 yrs and cant afford to do an aerial for £60 for all the reasons you stated - you didnt throw in the cost of a decent analyser at say £2000 - but I quite agree with everything you say --

Ian - you need to find that diamond in the rough to help you out! look hard enough and im sure you will get your man ! if I was in the midlands perhaps we could work together

HI
If you add the freeview box through the av2 of the panasonic dvd recorder you could record from the freeview box onto a dvd disc- you could watch a sky channel whilst the dvd recorder is recording - this means you could use the equipment you have without spending any cash and sending your equipment to landfill

Alternativly like Brian says you could buy a Freeview PVR which costs around £100 upwards this would enable you to watch one channel while recording another - you could in theory ditch sky especially if you dont use sky 1 movies or sport - the number of people who are paying sky because they think its the only way they can get digital is staggering!

- the freeview recorder would attach into one of the tv's 3 scart sockets

Ian -- Thanks for the comment re the cable for solar pv panels looking like sat cable - I have only worked on a few property with solar panels but never noticed the cables so its now lodged in my mind that there would be a possible problem picking the correct cable

Ian

In regards to ARE WE BUSY

its up and down one moment your pulled out the next its dead but im not sure if others work similar to me
basically I start a week with a hand full of jobs to see me through monday possibly tuesday then by the end of monday wednesday is full with a bit of thursday and it rolls constantly like that has done for 10 yrs since I started on my own

if I compare Business to 3 years ago there is a deffinate drop in the amount of work available and you have to be a bit more competative and be a sales man on the phone - what I do find that seriously works in my favour is Im polite and listen on the phone - I talk to my customers who choose me because of my phone manor I here that the other riggers they call are blunt ignorant and not bothered - a bit like the experiance that you have had with the guys you have tried to work with

I never rise to an argument and always handle things diplomatically - today is an example just hung a tv on a wall put it precisely where husband has told me - im packing van up to leave - wife walks in and says its too low - instead of creating an argument about extra time and inconvenience of restarting - I suggest moving it higher and in fact once I go grab my drill and take tv off it added about 10 mins to the job - -result one very satisfied customer!

i really struggle not to give a price over the phone - if I dont know the area then i go and quote but i usually have a an idea of whats needed when someone phones - I also find probably same as you that I get 9 out of 10 jobs by quoting over the phone

So lets open this one up

How many people prefer a tradesman to come to their house and quote and how many would like a price over the phone

I will read with interest

Subtitles -- there is usually a button on the remote that is dedicated to subtitles allthough my sony tv you have to use the "tools" button- my panasonic says "sttl " just press it once and subtitles come on - you can change channels without turning subtitles on or off - unlike normal teletext where you press text enter page number 888 then turn it off before changing channel

As For

What is the Inversion Effect and why does it effect my Freeview TV reception?

Its not fun when it happens I live in sheffield we use Emley moor and Sheffield transmitter as main but Sheffield is so hilly that we resort to using other transmitters like Belmont and Waltham

Now Because Belmont is East of Sheffield the aerials point to the continent - when there is an Atmospheric lift on signals travel much further than they should - so we get signals coming in from the continent wiping out the reception of belmont- Emley moor and Sheffield transmitter is usually un affected

Hope fully after switchover we can start offering people on the belmont transmitter a change of aerial wether that means a new aerial as Belmont is a Group A(pre digital -- Now wideband) and Emley Moor is a Group B or a simple re alignment

The Benefit to the customer would be the correct news as annoyingly Belmont transmits lincolnshire news - no problem if you live in that area but for people of sheffield they seem to prefer Yorkshire news (something to do with being in Yorkshire I assume)
The Other benefit is that hopefully the Inversion Effect would not be an issue anymore to these people who change

Incidentally The Inversion effect happens on Hot Sunny days when there is zero breeze and no clouds

can usually expect a call in relation to this in these conditions
