Gautham:

You need a log-periodic aerial mounted externally above the roof, they are usually mounted on a chimney stack.

I use one of the type mentioned at Online FM DAB TV Aerial sales = other makes and suppliers are available.

For any contributor here top assist we need your full post code so we can determine which transmitter you should use and whether there are any reception issues. Without that information it is impossible to assist.

Would you please check what the reported signal strengths are for each of the Sudbury multiplexes. You are 32 km from that transmitter so should e getting a good signal without any need to an amplifier. The channels to check are: 44, 41, 47, 58, 60- and 56. Note that these are the channels used by the transmitter and not the programme numbers.

Ideally you should have a signal strength of between 55% and 85% for normal SD channels and between 65 and 80% for HD channels. If your signals are less than that then it is worth checking all the aerial cabling that you can access and check for any lose connections or frayed wires. If the strength is more than that stated then you have too much signal, in which case do you have an aerial amplifier or a powered distribution unit?

Further advice depending on your feedback.

John:

It appears that your are receiving signals from the Clacton Freeview Lite transmitter - which is not ideal for your location. Take a look at Coverage Checker - Detailed View which gives the reception prediction for your location.

You need to have your aerial turned to aim at a bearing of 313 degrees. It is of the correct type to receive the signals from Sudbury, the main transmitter for your area.

Once that has been done, manually tune to the channels stated earlier and avoid channels 41, 49 and 54 as these are the ones from Clacton.

Look at the entry immediately above yours! It states that the Ludlow transmitter was off air from 0908 until 1000 today.

Full technical details of Freeview

Chris:

You should be getting some signals from Huntshaw Cross transmitter which is on a bearing or 318 degrees from your location, as shown on the 'digitaluk trade' entry below your lost (see Coverage Checker - Detailed View if you can't see it).

You should be getting signals on channels 48, 50, 52, 55, 56 and 59, though 52 and 56 might not be reliable. Your aerial needs to be either a Group C type or better a log-periodic with sufficient sensitivity, so at least a log36 type.

The alternative is Beacon Hill at 191 degrees but reception can be problematic even though it is closer. Both transmitters show there are hills potenially causing reception problems.

What type of aerial have you got in the loft? How high is it mounted?

Cynthia:

What box are you meaning? Many Sky or Freeview set top boxes need to be disconnected from the mains for at least 5 minutes before plugging in again and allowing it to reset. Try that next by removing the mains plug from the wall socket for a minimum of 5 minutes, then plug it in again and wait aniother 5 minutes whilst it resets. Then try turning it on with the remote control and see what you get.

Brian:

It would appear that you had been getting the 'free to air' channels via your Sky box (not quite the same as Freeview as they are purely terrestrial transmissions). Try disconnecting the mains supply to the box for at least 5 minutes, then plugging in the mains again and wating another 5 minutes before try to see what sound and pictures you get. If there is still nothing then you may have a fault in the box.

Rowridge (Isle Of Wight, England) transmitter
Friday 16 December 2016 6:00PM

Charles Turner:

It is always wise to carefully check all your internal signal cabling as some types of cable fault can cause differential effects on different signal frequencies. So I would suggest a careful check would be a good idea.

Having said that you are at about the normal limit for Rowridge, according to the map at Freeview reception at DT1+ 2BT for your location. So if there are any potential difficulties they would show up on the weakest signals first. According to the listing at Coverage Checker - Detailed View for your location, ARQA on Ch22 is liable to be the most affected by any reception difficulties. Ch28 is also a potential problem as the HD transmissions are of lower power, so more susceptible. Ch25 is also potentially marginal.

So a good aerial system is essential, hence the checks are well worth doing (or having done by someone knowledgeable).
