Please will you check which transmitter you are tuned to. Skelmersdale transmitter provides the BBC A multiplex on channel 43, the D3&4 multiplex is one channel 46 and the BBC B multiiplex is on channel 40 (Note: the are not the programme numbers [LCNs] but the actual frequency channels.) A Group B aerial is suitable for those channels.
An alternative transmitter available to you is that at Winter Hill. That broadcasts BBC A on channel 50, D3&4 on channel 59, BBC B on channel 54, SDN on channel 58, ARQA on channel 49, ARQB on channel 37, COM7 is on channel 55 and COM8 is on channel 31. A wideband aerial is required for all those channels.
Whislt checking what channels your TV is tuned to, please check the reported signal strengths for each multiplex. Ideally, they should be between 60% and 85%. Less is always a problem, whilst more can give rise to the effects (pixelation, etc) that you are reporting.

Please provide a full post code so we can examine the signal reception conditions at your location and which of the over 1,100 transmitters you are likely to be using.

Derek Butterworth:
Thanks for the post code. We can now see that your best transmitter is at Whitworth, see Coverage Checker - Detailed View for details of expected reception.
That is a Freeview Light transmitter providing BBCA, D3&4 and BBCB (HD) multiplexes only. There is no reason why the transmitter should not be providing its normal services at night. Perhaps you have a powered splitter that is connected to the mains supply via a timer?

It's not my website, it is run by Briantist and only he can maintain and manage the site. It is perfectly easy to use and the request for a post code is because there are over 1,100 transmitters around the country and to answer any reception questions it is essential that we contributors know which transmitter(s) are available. It's perfectly logical really.

Those figures are only for guidance as they are projections based upon incomplete measurements and not taken at the locality under consideration. As you must be aware there are many variables affecting the signal conditions at the precise locality, they even vary from one house to the neighbouring one. As those figures are only calculated predictions that takes no account of the local variables, such as hills or houses or even trees, I find them only a rough guide and not absolutes. I know of many areas and individual locations where the signal conditions vary very considerably along a road. I know of one road in NW Kent where one neighbour has to use a very tall mast to get anything from Crystal Palace and yet the neighbour can use a conventional Yagi on a short roof-mounted pole! It's not that unusual in my 50 years experience.

I never said they were more reliable for one transmitter over another. I said that they were ALL unreliable. So I take very little notice of them because they can be misleading. QED.

The Sony channels have been moved onto the local multiplex, if there is one at your location as not all transmitters provide such. Check whether you get any programmes on LCN 7 or 8. If you do then you should get the Sony programmes. If you don't then you will not get Sony programmes. If you are uncertain, then put your full post code into the Digital UK Coverage Checker at About us | Freeview

Please could you tell us your full post code. Then tell us the reported signal strengths of all the multiplexes available to you. That information will help us contributors to form a 'picture' of your signal conditions.
One thought is that you may have too much signal, hence the request for the strengths.
