Slittle: If you are referring to a Sky+ HD box then the card slot is behind a drop down flap on the lower right hand side of the facia slightly under the silver line, its not easy to see as it doesnt have a pull down lip.

This said assuming that its the viewing card slot that you are referring to and not an interactive one? as only the older boxes have them.

steve j: Both Reigate (@ 6 miles) and Crystal Palace (@ 18 miles) transmitters cover your area and so either of the two log type aerials seen on the links would be suffice for requirements no matter what station was used.

Slittle: I only replied to what appeared to be a comment regarding the "F" connectors fitted by the engineer who installed your Sky box and not anything concerning your apparent failure to receive a signal, which of course you did not mention anything about.

However on the assumption that the aforementioned applies then you should carry out a proper signal check to see if anything is being indicated, but before doing so "if" you are using a Sky+ box try swapping the two LNB inputs over just in case LNB1 has developed a fault, because if it has the picture will return albeit any attempt to record will fail.

If though the signal test does not reveal any trace of a signal then either the dish has moved out of alignment or the box has developed a fault.

If using a Standard or Sky+ box.

Press: "Services" - 4 - 6 and this will take you onto the signal checking screen.

If using a Sky+ HD box. (latest menu system)

(1): Press "Services" and you will see the main menu with "Options" being highlighted.

(2): Press the right arrow once to change from Options to "Settings" and press on once highlighted.

(3): Finally, scroll to the right to select and press on "Signal", the grey bars now displayed will show you the strength / quality of the signal.

Should any signal be indicated then it has to around the 55% (or equivalent of) minimum level to resolve a picture and especially where the quality is concerned, because if the quality is observed to be under that of the signal strength then that generally indicates that the dish requires slight re-aligning.

If though nothing is being indicated, then the dish could be a bit too far out of alignment for the aforementioned to apply, or the box has developed a fault, this being irrespective of whether its new or not.

Graham Dent: Unfortunately not unless by recording them one at a time (and in real time) via the Sky boxes scart or HDMI output socket into a DVD recorder that also incorporates a hard disk drive, a very long winded process!

emma: Have you checked with your neighbours to find out if they are also experiencing this problem? although the other point I am not sure about is, when you referred to changing your aerial are you meaning the jumper lead from a wall plate to the TV or are you using an indoor aerial? because if its the jumper lead then is your flat fed by a communal aerial? if it is then there is a possibility that the electrical supply to the distribution amplifier that feeds the flats is accidentally getting switched off during night time as its on the same circuit as say communal lighting.

Another point being, you should refrain from re-tuning your TV if you find that the screen is blank, because retuning on a blank screen generally results in the channels already stored in the tuners memory being wiped out, because in the majority of cases although the screen is blank the channels will still be stored in the memory but are being received under the level that can resolve a picture, and so if you find a blank screen carry out a signal strength test on the programme channel selected and see if any level is being indicated.

Maybe you could give an update on the points mentioned.

Neil Killip: Irrespective of the apparent time factor involved, checking on the signal levels expected in your area does not indicate Waltham as being the best station to use as good reception is only shown as being possible from the BBC and ITV transmitters, HD and the SDN mux (ITV3 etc) indicated as variable and with ArqA being poor, ArqB not being possible at all, whereas Sandy albeit being far further away indicates good reception on all channels.

Checking the terrain predictor indicates that the signal path from Waltham starts being affected from roughly 8 miles away but severely through obstructions from just under 5 miles, and although the proverbial pinch of salt has always to be taken with predictors the problem you have reported is in line with what would be expected, i.e: erratic reception.

Although your Waltham facing aerial is a bit off being 180 degrees from Sandy you should try going into your Panasonic's tuning menu / manual tune and enter Sandy's BBC on Ch27 but do NOT press search, as the signal levels received should immediately be seen on the indicator bars, note what it is and then enter Ch51 Sandy's ITV3 etc on the SDN mux, likewise noting the level and giving an update on the results.

Joe: I am not quite clear about what you mean by having "reset" your external aerial cable? as the problem you now have still suggests that there is a fault with the aerial as the BBC that you are receiving is from the Storeton 2KW transmitter on Ch57 and so you should also be receiving ITV on mux Ch53, the commercials being on much lower power (560 watts) and which you are not likely receive if there is any deficiency in your aerial system.

Pete: If you do indeed have a Sky HD box then you will still be able to use for reception all free HD channels such as BBC1 HD, BBC HD, ITV1 HD, C4 HD, as its only the recording / playback side of the box as well as the ability to view channels dedicated to a Sky package that's disabled.

Mazbar: Well if this persons aerial is installed as you have described in an area noted for high wind, then its maybe on the cards that come the next storm you may well receive call out of desperation with this person willing to pay anything to have the problem sorted out, the cowboy installer not being contactable.
