Heather Richardson: If you were using a standard Sky box and you have now purchased a Sky+ version then in the general run of things you require a new card, the reason being that Sky has to download the access code necessary to allow you to use the recording side of your box.

The other qualification is, that cards supplied for Sky+ boxes are usually matched to the boxes serial number whereby they will only work in that box as far as accessing the recording / play back side of it is concerned.

Maybe you could verify if its a standard Sky box that you are using? as it will only have one feed from the dish whereas a Sky+ box requires two, meaning that the dishes LNB has to be either a dual or a quad type.

Janet Grosso: This type of problem is suggestive of your equipment receiving variable levels of signals coupled to your devices being set for automatic updates, as should an update take place when the signal is too low to resolve a picture it will leave blank spaces on the programme list.

You should carry out a signal strength / quality check on one of the programmes that's prone to being troublesome and observe the indication levels for a couple of minutes or so to see if they (especially quality) are widely fluctuating, as if they are then the problem could be out with your control, and so rather than spending time trying experiments as far as retuning etc is concerned its by far the best policy to first of all make an enquiry with a neighbour just to verify (or not as the case may be) if the problem is also being experienced by other people.

By the way you are indicated as being roughly just under 16 miles from the Crystal Palace transmitter, and are possibly using a communal aerial system?

Maybe you could give an update on the points raised, ie: signal strength / aerial system being used.

Geoffrey: The "other channels" facility is the only method you can use with a Sky+ box to receive channels from another area, as unlike a Freesat box where its possible for the user to place themselves anywhere in the UK by simply entering a post code appropriate to the desired area in the set up menu, unfortunately this is not possible with Sky devices as that data is programmed into the Sky card when its sent to you, something that Sky are most reluctant to alter as they like keeping a strict check on a subscribers location.

Mel: And just to add to that said by KMJ,Derby, should you find that the Panasonic TV is tuned to the same transmitters as the Freeview boxes then you should really be using a three output powered splitter to feed each of the devices, as this is the only way of guaranteeing that the signal levels received by each device are at exactly the same levels as each other, as Panasonic tuners are one of the best types around for sensitivity and overall performance, and if the Panasonic is tuned to the same transmitters as the Freeview boxes and yet it lags behind them then it strongly suggests a deficiency in its aerial feed.

Rob Anson: When you were first setting up / installing your new Panasonic are you sure that you selected the correct region? that being Yorkshire, as not having any HD signal is liable to indicate that you have selected Tyne Tees which is from the Bilsdale transmitter as you are indicated as being able to receive Freeview from both stations, Bilsdale presently being on low power as well as not transmitting HD until September 26th. If you still experience any difficulty then tune Emley Moor in using the "manual tuning" facility after having blanked out anything already stored by carrying out an auto-tune without the aerial being plugged in. Emley Moors channels being / 47(BBC) - 44(ITV) - 41(HD) - 51(ITV3 etc) - 52(Pick TV etc) - 48(Yesterday etc)

JB: You are indicated as being only about a mile away from the transmitter and as such it being virtually impossible to lose a signal unless its caused by either the transmitter being down for some reason or another, or alternatively that the signal you are receiving is slightly over the top in strength and is causing blocking in the tuner.

You can test the latter theory out by simply temporarily replacing the aerial with a piece of wire of about two or three feet long and carrying out an auto-tune, or much better should your device allow it, a manual tune on mux Ch49.

By the way, its best not to automatically assume that all is OK at the transmitter simply because nothing is seen published, as bang on up to date info is usually only associated with BBC transmitter faults.

Alan Clark: Thanks once again for the update, as positive reports such as yours along with the distance from / degrees to the TX are handy for reference purposes, and as such kept filed away (by me anyway) for possible future use as may prove necessary.

nige burr: Unless you are located in some horrendous localised black spot for reception then as the Kings Weston transmitter is located at only 1.8 miles away from you its possible for you to be receiving an excessively high level of signal dependant on the aerial system being used, as this can completely block reception by overloading the tuner.

If you are using any form of amplifier then for a test try by-passing it, or alternatively use a piece of wire (about 2 or 3 feet) connected into your equipments aerial socket and carry out a "manual" scan on mux Ch43 (Kings Weston BBC1), if though your equipment does not offer a manual scan option then carry out an auto-tune "after" having blanked out anything stored by auto tuning with the aerial removed.

By the way "if" you are receiving from Mendip then the BBC channel is mux Ch61
.

JB: Well its not really possible nowadays to make contact with transmitter personnel, but what I mentioned regarding the temporary aerial wire test simply involves access to the aerial socket at the back of the TV, and now I know that its a Samsung that's involved is even a more essential test, as Samsung's do not take kindly to even slightly excessive levels of input signals.

Jim: If you can access the menu system then I suggest that you carry out another auto-tune, if however you cannot get into the menu then unplug the box from the mains supply for a few minutes before reconnecting again and then (hopefully!) carry out the auto-tune.

Should though the disconnecting from the mains supply procedure not have made any difference to the situation then the box has developed a fault, and so you should contact the suppliers.

By the way you are indicated as being approx 2 miles away from the Penicuik transmitter.
