Dave Lindsay: Well I certainly appreciate what you mean about the cooling fan noise levels being annoying, and especially so when a box is sited in a bedroom, but equipment searching for updates in the early hours of the morning is basically programmed for that to happen at these times from within the box itself, and simply because the chances of an update being successfully downloaded within the time slot allocated by the broadcaster always stands a better chance if done in the early hours of the morning over that any other time, as in the early hours of the morning most peoples boxes will be sitting in standby ready to spring into action on PSB1 at the predetermined time, no matter how unearthly it might be!!

Although unaware re the brand model of box that you keep switched off overnight, but on Humax 9200's you can alter the time it searches for updates from its default setting of 4.00am, or even switch them off altogether whereas on many other devices you are unable to alter anything, one rather annoying aspect of leaving the updates activated being that once the box has been triggered to start searching it will run for an allocated period of time whether or not any downloads are there to take place, or are maybe just repeats or previous ones, in other words an annoyance for no real purpose.

Of course this procedure also applied to the regular night time updates that were used by analogue VCR's equipped with PDC, these always taking place around 3am, although in the case of PDC these were always essential in the immediate sense to enable the auto-start / stop programme timers to operate correctly.

Regarding the National grid, yes I suppose it might well show as a slight surge on the control room's demand status indicators, but considering there is generally a surplus of power in the early hours of the morning its neither here nor there.

Dave Lindsay: Just a little clarification on a point I made, insomuch that the time slot allocated for an equipment download can be classed as similar to you informing someone else on the PC that you will make a file available for them to download for a certain period of time, but with them deciding when they wish to do it within the time slot you gave, this being why on the aforementioned Humax's it enables the user to decide.

David Parker: Pity about Argos being out of stock of the HD-Fox T2, but its something that just shows how popular these are. I also noticed that Curry's is currently advertising them @ £89.99 for shop pick up only, and should a branch be near to your location it would enable you to have a no-obligation study at them.

The Humax site also had re-graded versions at the excellent price of £59.00 in their "managers specials" these coming with a full guarantee, however as would be expected the "No Stock" banner is seen displayed.

lee townend: A fault of that nature can only be caused by something concerning your installation, are you sure that nothing has happened with your dish? although another aspect could also apply, being that if your box has been running for a lengthy period of time (weeks) before being unpowered then sometimes they can develop a fault on cooling down whereby something will blow on switch on.

Can you see the menu screen? and if you can press services - 4 - 6 and see if the signal indicators are completely blank or are showing a very low level of signal.

Stuart Ratzakli: You are quite correct regarding using the favourites method as I forgot about that option, but regarding your own query, there is nothing to stop you provided that you are outside of the initial contract period.

ChrisC: I am not quite sure about what posting you are referring to, but if its in relating to Tony's posting made back in January, then if a person lets their Sky+ subscription end then they will not be able to access the recording or playback side of the box, as Sky permanently retains the right of access to it unless a subscription of I believe £10.00 is paid.

Pat chittenden: There is unfortunately nothing you can do about this as its basically caused by the atmospheric conditions that are presently applying, if you had refrained from carry out a re-tune it would have only have been a simple case of checking now and again to see if the situation had improved any, whereas now you have re-tuned you will have lost them, this meaning that you will now have to carry out frequent re-scans to pick the channels back up again.

To be quite honest about it, on checking your reception possibilities it doesn't appear that you will really have good reception from anywhere before June 27th, as then the transmitters that cover your area (Dover and Ramsgate's PSB only relay) will be switching over to higher powered operation.

G73: Although you have indicated that you are receiving from the Angus transmitter, unfortunately is not really possible for me to reply with any level of accuracy without being able to assess the signal strength thats liable to be expected in your area without having knowledge of your post code, or at least one from very close to your location like a shop or whatever.

The other point thats slightly puzzling being that the channel you mention is one of the three higher powered ones, something which could indicate that your problem is possibly being caused by interference from far further afield and due to the current atmospheric conditions applying.

Joh K Slater: Bilsdale (@ 16mls) has on going work associated with high powered switchover later on in the year when the PSB muxes power up to 100kw, and with the commercials all operating at 50Kw. As things are at present the BBC is only at 4.8Kw / ITV 6Kw / SDN 6Kw (ITV3) / ArqB 6Kw (Yesterday, Film 4 etc) but though ArqA (Pick TV, Dave) is running at only 1.6Kw.

However the problem you are reporting is very likely being caused by the current atmospheric conditions that are applying, as numerous people throughout the UK (mostly from the borders downwards) are experiencing problems, North of you not being affected quite to the same extent.

Needless to say there isn't really any cure for your present problem except to wait until conditions ease up somewhat, although its not until September 26th (12th for BBC) when high powered operation starts that you should see a vast improvement in your reception, this date also being a re-tune event.

Just out of curiosity, Emley Moor (@ 40mls) is indicated as a possibility for your area with reasonably good reception predicted across all six multiplexes, and although its reception would not quite be on the reverse of your aerial it would be worth trying a signal check from there using the manual tuning facility, because if you go onto that menu as soon as you enter a channel number its strength should appear so you don't actually have to scan it, Emley Moors channels being : 47 (BBC) - 44 (ITV) - 41 (HD) - 51 (SDN) - 52 (ArqA) - 48 (ArqB)

Should on carrying out a few checks the signal indicate as being reasonably good then you could maybe scrub Bilsdale in favour of Emley, as least for the time being anyway.

Hannah Chacko: Where you are located at slightly to the West of Lincoln you should be able to receive good signals from both Belmont and Waltham, the problem being that its very easy for your TV to pick up a mix from both places, what you should do is have a check up in the 800 channel ranges for duplicates of the channels that's not very good on the lower numbers, and if you find one and its OK then carry out a signal check on it for purposes of noting the mux channel number seen along with the strength indication, unless that is you also see East Midlands or Yorkshire / East Lincs indicated, if not though check the mux channel against the list below and that will indicate where the signal is coming from.

Use that same procedure on any channel that's not very good and check it against the list, as the only way you are liable to regain good reception is by resetting your TV to scrub anything stored, then manually tune in the channels known to be the best.
