Albert Whitehouse: Regarding the factory reset, to clear the box of anything stored press the "Menu" key for the main menu and select "installation" followed by selecting "First time installation", the box will then switch off for a few seconds, and as soon as the LED on the front panel switches off you can begin a fresh installation again, either by trying another auto-scan and seeing how that goes, or if the problem returns carry out the aforementioned reset followed by the action suggested by Dave Lindsay.

David Hall: The engineer is quite correct as the Tivo box does not have any RF connections such as I assume you had previously been using from the Sky+ boxes RF1/2 output.

However you could extend "one" of the two cables that you were using on the Sky+ box and feed that into the kitchen if you install the Sky box there, as all you require is a length of satellite grade coax cable and two "F" connector plugs, plus of course an "F" to "F" plug coupler. By the way the reason I mentioned one cable is because the Sky+ box in effect becomes an ordinary Sky box without a subscription, as the second tuner / record / playback facilities become inoperable.

If though you would prefer to watch the Tivo box in the kitchen than all you require to do is purchase a freestanding RF modulator such as seen in the link, this being coupled into the scart socket on the rear of your Tivo, and the RF output from the modulator connected into the lead that originally went from the Sky boxes RF output.

David Hall: Well it could have been for that reason but its difficult to say, as some devices can have problems communicating with each other via HDMI, but should you have an HDMI lead lying around I would be inclined switch the Tivo box completely off (from mains power) and remove one of the scart plugs from between the box and the TV and couple them up using the HDMI cable, this followed by powering up the Tivo again to see what transpires, but leave it like that for a minute or two before taking things any further as it might not come on straight away, if though the Tivo still doesn't appear to be there then go into your TV's "input select" menu and make sure that the HDMI socket is selected as the input.

If all attempts fail then you will have to purchase one of these cheap two way scart splitters, the type that doesn't have a choice button and which are generally found in places like Poundland and such likes, the common going into the Tivo and with one output going to the TV and the other to the modulator.

It would have been of help though to know what model of TV you have.

Gerald C. May: Just purely out of interest although being fully aware that manual tuning will in most cases succeed where auto-tuning fails, this obviously being the reason that you advised John to carry out that procedure, but did you find that in your own case that you also had to use this method? as it shouldn't really have proved as being necessary as that's the whole point about "auto" tuning, being, that you should not require to enter any details into the box whatsoever to receive anything within the coverage area of the transmitter irrespective of whether you are dealing with SD or HD, and with this fact being mostly likely why Humax had told John that the transmitter might be down as its about the only thing that could cause that type of problem, although one that's liable to give rise to suspicion that a problem might exist with the software on that model. (Latest software indicated as version 1.02.20)

Looking forward to your reply.

Julian P: This is simply because of one device having a more sensitive tuner than the other, as no two tuners have the same sensitivity. The only thing that usually helps in this type of situation is by using a two way powered splitter, as this not only guarantees that each of the two devices will receive exactly the same level of signal but also gives each of them a slight boost at the same time.

Just as a matter of interest where are you receiving your signal from? as according to the post code it could be either Guildford or Midhurst but with neither exactly indicating as being sparkling as far as reception on a permanent basis is concerned.

Shirley: If you are referring to the Sky box freezing, then although this can happen on a "very" odd occasion the problem could possibly be caused by the dish being slightly out of alignment or alternatively the actual Sky boxes power unit going slightly downhill, especially if the box is a few years old.

You should carry out a signal check on the Sky box, accessed via: "services - 4 - 6" and where both the signal and quality should be seen indicated as level pegging at about 75% of the scale, if the quality is lower then the dish is a fraction out, but if not then the box is the problem.

As far as Freeview is concerned, its best that you wait until April 18th when Crystal Palace is fully switched over before making any decisions as far as purchases are concerned, the only reason I mention Crystal Palace being, that although Rouncefall and Sudbury is presently indicated as being good for reception as well as both of them being closer to that of Crystal Palace, but as far as Sudbury is concerned you could well class it as a Freeview light transmitter as its commercial multiplexes are permanently indicated as being variable for reception, meaning they cannot be relied upon, Rouncefall not transmitting commercial stations by being PSB only.

As far as sharing the dish is concerned, does the other party involved have normal Sky or is it Sky+? I ask as if its Sky+ then they will have two leads from the dish, and should a quad LNB have been fitted onto the dish that would leave you also with two outlets enabling you to use a twin tuner Freesat recorder, "if" an additional coax was run from the dish.

Maybe you could give an update as far as that is concerned, and I can then give further advice appropriate to answer given.

David Hall: That's excellent news, as I have just been wading through the comprehensive manual for your set and making one or two notes, and I have to admit also at the same time "hoping" that you had the user manual for same, as some of the procedures mentioned are horrendously complex likewise requiring lengthy explanations, one of concerning what you have found out for yourself regarding activating the appropriate HDMI input.

Anyway I look forward to an update once you have purchased the RF modulator, which by the way is programmed for the channel required by a series of DIL switches being either set up or down, so I would check the box for security and if it appears as though it has been opened then I would advise you to ensure that the leaflet is still enclosed.

John: To be quite honest about it I wasn't in any way disputing what had been said by anyone, I was simply stating that the procedure used should have been unnecessary to receive an HD channel, however on the basis of what you have said then it now strongly suggests that the reason for you not picking up Ch21 on the manual scan was most likely because you had accidentally omitted to select DVB-T2 during the setting up procedure for the scan, something which the Humax customer advisor you spoke to had possibly overlooked.

Kraig: Its very doubtful if it would (if you dont already have one) as the multiplex that Film 4 uses is temporarily on very low power and numerous people located at about your distance from the station (9 mls) and up to about 15 mls are having problems trying to receive it, basically due to their tuners being slightly desensitized by the massive differential in power between the main BBC mux on 100kw compared to the 2.2Kw used by ArqB(film 4 etc).

There isnt really anything you can do about it at present, as the situation will be rectified come June 27th when the low powered multiplexes go over to high power operation.

Malcolm Brooks: Well that possibility always exists as general warnings of a weak signal have been published, although should this be applying then when you go into the manual tuning menu on most devices as soon as you enter the channel number you intend to scan into the box provided the signal strength its being received at will immediately appear before you scan it, so does nothing show when you are at the pre-scan stage?
