Becky: Have you advanced the volume control of your "Freesat boxes remote control" to around 80%+ or so minimum? as the volume control levels on any equipment connected into a TV have to be kept around this level or they will appear to be very quiet when compared to the TV's normal levels when not using external devices.
If though you have already done this, then have you double checked that the cable connectors (scart or HDMI) coupling the Freesat box into the TV are fully inserted into their respective sockets.
Should you have tried that mentioned and the situation has not changed, then please supply the model number of the Freesat box in question.

Dave Lindsay: Fully understand!, although I suppose that it could be said that you are confirming what I had mentioned in the first paragraph of my previous reply, insomuch >>> or did you find that the swamping effect of the VCR's modulator on C53 took the edge off Emley's COM5 whereby it wasn't recorded? e.g: the 4G effect! <<<
Although by the fact of the modulator being able to swamp the channel under which it was set on somewhat indicated that the same thing would happen if set on C52, i.e: swamping the channel that was required, namely C51.
As far as the VCR is concerned, although everything would appear to be OK now but if it hadn't I would have been inclined to open up the VCR and pull out the tape drum connector to stop it from running, as this in turn would have kept the heatsink temperatures down whereby the fan might not have came on quite so often, still that's in the past now!

Becky: I take it that you are referring to a Freesat satellite box? and if so is it a Bush?
If though it is, then carry out a signal strength & quality check and report back on your findings as far as the levels being indicated are concerned, approximate percentage levels are suffice as its nearly impossible to lose programmes such as you have mentioned on a satellite device.
By the way, if it is a Bush then the signal strength indications are seen on the "information menu".

Becky: Yes, and with this being the case then you only really have one option to try, that of carrying out a first time installation and where you have to re-enter your post code which enables you to receive the correct local news services etc for your area.
If though this action does not correct the problem then unfortunately it points to your box having developed a fault, and which I suspect that it might have as satellite signals (unlike terrestrial based Freeview) are always there.
By the way, my reason for querying if you were definitely referring to a Freesat (satellite) box is because the two programmes you refer to as missing are both received on the same Freeview (via normal aerial) transmitter channel.

DM: This problem was rectified for most people yesterday, the fault apparently being caused by a defect in COM5's EPG data, but to get the device out of the update mode press and hold the power / standby button on the recorder for about 5 seconds and this might effect a cure, if it doesnt then the other method "which returns the box to its factory settings" is to (on the recorder) hold down the stop button and then press the on/standby button, all settings will be reset and the box will turn off.
This will as would be expected, require you to carry out a retune to recover the channels.

john: Although by rights you should be able to record the Drama channel as it does not have any restrictions on it, however I have since found out that a number of YouView boxes of the Huawei brand are unable to record Drama because of a defect within the box, and which has not as yet been rectified, YouView having been aware of this problem since the 8th when Drama first started.
The question is, do you have this brand of box?

Becky: All others in the house? because should you have another Freesat box then try connecting it onto the coax feed "from the dish" thats normally used for the Bush, or alternatively try the Bush on the other Freesat boxes coax.
This test purely for the purpose of double checking that the Bush is indeed faulty.

suzy,saxon@yahoo.com: High signal strength but accompanied with erratic quality is in most cases caused by factors outwith a persons household, although a bad joint (corroded) where the coax is terminated into the aerial box can also result in these symptoms being displayed, and so to eliminate any possibility of this being responsible for your problem if at all possible (as I realise sometimes it isnt!) I would try and check with a neighbour to find out if they are also being similarly affected "on the same channels".
I would though check that COM4 and COM5 (the transmitters associated with the programme channels mentioned) are being received from Sandy and not Crystal Palace, Sandy's COM4 being on mux Ch51 and COM5 being on Ch52, checking being relatively easy to do if you are still using the Humax 9150T.
Should though you discover that your neighbours are also experiencing similar problems to yourself (which I suspect will apply) then unfortunately there really isn't anything you can do, as its just one of the pitfalls of digital reception when located in a less than ideal area for reception.

Dave Lindsay: Re: 10.48 posting, funny you should mention the procedure you were using as I did wonder, not being quite sure if you were injecting the analogue modulator into the system using a "Y" splitter in reverse as a combiner, its common leg going into the Sony and each of the other two legs being fed from the aerial and VCR respectively, although the method used by yourself certainly seemed to be quite effective by the fact of it backing up user i.d: brian's findings (20th @ 7.09pm) of singling out COM5 as being the cause of the problem.
As far as Sony taking measures to address the apparent vulnerability of these boxes to whatever data glitch had caused the problem, I have an open mind on this as to whether or not they would consider it necessary to do this, because the whole situation could simply have been caused accidentally at Arqiva's end by a glitch having occurred when COM5's EPG data was being entered, and not necessarily as a result of any purposeful act of someone having altered the data for any reason.
The other aspect being, that Sony had not carried out any software up dates immediately prior to the problem occurring nor were they involved in any way with the problem clearing up again, and so up to a point anyway it could be said that Sony was relatively blameless in this particular case as corrupted data was responsible.
I have another sneaking suspicion that this sort of thing may also have been the reason for the recent WMC fiasco that blocked the reception of Waltham's PSB2 but only when received via WMC's PC tuners, this problem like COM5's having magically cleared up in exactly the same "silent" way and with no admission of responsibility having been taken for the problem.

Jane: Pleased to see that the situation has been rectified, at least for the time being anyway, but as far as Sony is concerned they haven't actually done anything recently that they would require to be ready to alter, as the update message seen on Sony boxes is something that the box does automatically every few hours during a period of 24 hours for the purpose of updating channel info etc but came against a sticky wicket when trying to update COM5 (Pick TV / Sky news etc) due to a problem with the signal from that multiplex.
The fact that your box is now operational again is not connected with anything that Sony has done.
