Emley Moor (Kirklees, England) transmitter

bryan phillips-martin: Belmont (@ 39mls) is indicated as having the edge on Emley Moor (@ 29mls) for reception at the location given, this of course totally dependant on any adverse local conditions that may apply, as predictors cannot really cater properly for these type of situations.

Sandy: Advice can only be given when a person
with a query on reception states their location, this preferably in the form of a post code.

Digital switch-over problems | Switchovers

BOB: Your SONY SLV-D980P GI can only be used to record via its scart sockets now, needless to say there is no need to connect your aerial into it as the tuner is now in effect redundant as far as digital signals are concerned and there is nothing that can be done to alter this situation.

However the only qualification to what's said being if you use the Sony's RF modulator to send a signal into another rooms "analogue" TV, or to a TV in another room that is dual standard, (analogue / digital) then the aerial can be used as normal to pass the Freeview signal through the Sony to the second TV, the TV concerned being switched to analogue to view any recording made, otherwise left on digital for Freeview reception.

Emley Moor (Kirklees, England) transmitter

Martin: As has been said by others, you require a device with a DVB-T2 tuner and the Humax doesnt have one as its not an HD recorder, nor does it suggest that it is.

The other point is that an HDMI connection doesnt automatically mean that the device that has it is capable of HD, as its only another more sophisticated type of connection.

If you can give the model of the TV in question this can also be verified if its capable (or not) of HD reception.

Benny London / Liz Falconer:

Benny London: No, I am not in the least offended! as what you have said is quite valid regarding HDMI difficulties when used with certain types of equipment, the reason though that I didn't bring that issue into the equation was because of the problem being on a single channel, as HDMI compatibility problems don't in the general run of things single out a particular channel to cause a problem on.

There in again, when dealing with digital signals all sorts of odd problems can strike!

Liz Falconer: I think you should have a look in the phone book for a TV shop located in Wick and give them a tinkle to enquire if they have heard of any problem with STV HD from the Rumster Forrest transmitter, as this point really needs to be verified, because if its definitely not a fault at the transmitter then it has to be the boxes, because good as Humax boxes may well be, and I have three, they are not without their faults.

mark: Not having supplied a post code for your location means that your reception possibilities cannot be checked on, but what you have mentioned suggests that any re-tune you may have carried out has resulted in you picking a signal up from another station that operates on lower Mux channels.

An alternative reason could be that the signal you are receiving is strong to the extent that it is blocking the tuner on your TV / box.

If the latter does apply then a larger aerial will make the situation worse.

James: Thanks for the update, and pleased to hear that there doesnt appear to be any snags in the coupling between the two devices, this hopefully indicating that once you have the dish installed you should have the type of set up you desired.

I will say that all reports read about that TV suggest the picture quality as being very good on that Plasma screen, which up to a point could not have been used to its best advantage when fed from the sets internal analogue tuner.

Phil: Fully realising that you have said you are in a bad reception area, but the fact of you being only five miles away from high powered Emley Moor could be causing overload problems in your TV/ boxes tuner, the symptoms of an over powerful signal being exactly the same as one that is too weak.

Although not mentioned, but should you have any form of booster fitted try removing it, or if you have type of set top aerial around try that for a test.

If you have neither, then you will likely have to purchase a simple attenuator to place in line with the aerial socket of your TV, as if you had a reasonable picture before DSO your problem points to the signal being too strong.

Chris Wilson: The reception predictor indicates the Wrekin (@ 25Km / 166degrees) as being your worst option for reception, as excepting HD, the remainder is a combination of variable and poor right across the board, although predictors cannot fully cater for any local obstructions that may be in evidence, so an element of inaccuracy always exists with these forecasts.

However Sutton Coldfield (@ 63Km / 120 degrees) and Winter Hill (@ 83Km / 6 degrees) both indicate good reception on about an even footing, so I would try a test on both these stations.

I would carry out the test by simply by turning your loft aerial around, that is so long as its not facing into a water tank on any of the two bearings mentioned, and I would then blank out anything stored by carrying out a scan without the aerial connected, then after re- connecting "manually" enter Winter Hills BBC1 Mux Ch on 62, storing anything received, then do the same again but on ITV Mux Ch59, these two multiplexes at least giving an idea of the reception strength, as if they appeared to be OK you could manually enter the remainder, these being HD on Mux Ch54 (only if HD TV used) other channels being Ch58 - Ch61 - Ch55.

If not though, blank anything stored then use the same procedure for Sutton Coldfield, BBC1 Mux Ch43 - ITV Mux Ch46, the remainder HD Mux Ch40 - Ch42 - Ch45 - Ch39.

chris: Another aspect you should consider as well as the issue of the possible offset problem, that of the possibility that the Technika TV's "might" be picking up stations from another source that uses lower Mux channels, and which hitherto were not receivable before high powered multiplex operation came into force in a variety of locations.

What I suggest you do to verify whether this applies or not, is to carry out a signal check whilst on BBC1 on both the Panasonic as well as the Technika, noting if the BBC Mux channel number indicated is the same on both sets, if its Oxford its Mux Ch53, whereas if Hannington its Mux Ch50, Hannington being indicated as possible for reception albeit on a lesser footing than Oxford.

(You could also use ITV1 or anything else, so long as the programme used is the same on both sets)
