Sudbury Arqiva multiplex B changes 16 November - retune require

Dave Lindsay: The signal strength is certainly lower on the loft aerial, but it only serves the bedroom TV, via a short coax. Connecting the main aerial cable to it is not really feasible. However, I will try an attenuator, for the price of around £4, it's worth a shot!
But I still don't understand why my Goodmans GDB9 digibox suddenly won't find ANY channels since November 16th. It worked perfectly before, even after DSO2.

Dave Lindsay: Thanks Dave, an attenuator is on order! The loft aerial is connected to a Toshiba DVD recorder, which is similar (in regards to reception capabilities) to the Samsung. So I wouldn't expect any real difference. As for the Goodmans, I've tried it on the loft aerial, and again, no channels at all (I think it must of just 'died' like the previous one!).
However, I did find something interesting last night when doing a re-scan via the DVB stick on the PC (connected to the main aerial, but that doesn't get ArqB either): it found 5 extra muxes - Ch42, 50, 55, 59, and 60. All showed 100% strength, but no channels found. I believe 4 of the 5 are being used by Tacolneston, so maybe I'm picking up those? And would they have an affect on the weak Sudbury muxes?

Dave Lindsay: Did a scan of 642mHz through to 786mHz on the PC tuner, but still getting the same results there, 100% strength, but only 10% quality on Ch42 and 50(same on Ch54), but worse still on the higher frequencies. The Samsung only displays 'Signal Status', which I guess is a blend of strength and quality, and looks to be around 60% (bar graph) on the above channels.
Still, I'll have the attenuator in a couple of days, so we'll have to wait and see what that does!

Dave Lindsay: Just a quick update, attenuator fitted, but unfortunately, reducing signal strength quickly resulted in loss of quality - picture break-up on the PSB muxes, and complete loss of the COMs. So back to square one! But then I guess the average Freeview tuner's signal meter is only a rough guide to strength/quality, as there's a big difference between them in readings from the same aerial input.
The main problem is that Sudbury B never was a high-power transmitter compared to A, even on analogue, and as far as I know, it is currently at maximum output capability.

Woody: I agree. I know the date for Dover's switchover was in the original DSO planning, but why won't they be going digital till next June? It's "done in stages" they say, "to give viewers time to prepare". Well, I can understand the technical reasons why Sudbury have to wait for them to switch over, but as most of the country is now all digital, people getting Dover's transmissions have had plenty of time to buy suitable equipment. Perhaps pressure can be put on bringing the date forward, especially by Channel 4 when they realise how many thousands can't watch Film4 on Freeview from Sudbury. I don't reckon the advertisers are happy about it.
Does anyone out there know if Dover's DSO could be brought forward?

jb38: With reference to the last paragraph of your reply to Alan, the point about different tuners seems to have been proved. Having had no luck with my existing tuners trying (without success) to receive Ch63, I today installed a new Goodmans GDB18FVZS2 set-top box. Scanned for channels, and lo-and-behold, it found 112, including those on ArqB that had previously proved illusive! Compare that with the mere 64 channels the other tuners found.
OK, it means buying more equipment, but Goodmans STB's are cheap (priced as low as £25), and worth the expense if you get all the 'lost' channels back. Of course, there's no guarantee other people would get similar results, but it may be the best option for a lot of folks out there with similar problems.

jb38: Thanks for the reply. As we know, the public face of Digital TV would have us all believe that the switchover would be easy, and everyone would get a wonderful service. But spending a year or more on this forum has shown me what a difficult job TV and aerial installers are having, dealing with a multitude of different situations.

Briantist:
I currently use an August DVB-T USB receiver to watch Freeview on my PC, with a Hanns G 22" LCD widescreen monitor. That gives a superb high-resolution TV picture, as it does showing HD video. So I am considering upgrading to an HD DVB-T2 USB receiver. The Hanns G is not labelled as HD, but the model is available with an HDMI input.
Therefore, would you say that to all intents and purposes the monitor would display HD TV as well as an HD television?

Briantist:
Thanks Brian, yes the monitor is connected to the PC via a DVI cable, so all looks good for HD!

Norm De Plume/James Elliston: Sound advice! Sorry to be picky Norm, but just one tiny error - the date for the last Sudbury re-tune is scheduled for 27 June 2012, when ArqA and B should return for those who have missed it!
