Windermere (Cumbria, England) DAB transmitter
Thursday 31 January 2013 10:26AM

John Hiley: Interestingly, Windermere BBC DAB transmitter was off air from 23:17 on 25 Jan to 10:30 on 27 Jan. (Click the link "R+T Investigation" at the side of your posting to see.).

Bryan: So touring areas that are served by horizontally polarised transmitters is preferred then!

Parking on high ground should leave you in good stead to receive from main (horizontally polarised) transmitters.

Mary: There are fewer HD regions due to the cost of providing different feeds.

BBC One HD has one region for the whole of England which means that no regional output is carried on it.

Nationwide, ITV has opted to provide about four or five HD regions and those transmitters whose region there isn't a HD equivalent of get the ITV HD of another region.

The majority of the time, all regions carry the same content. So providing a HD feed for each and every region would only be of benefit for the short periods that they are different.

You say that you get 36 channels but Sudbury broadcasts all Freeview channels. To receive all channels you may need your aerial replacing.

Refer to this page for a list of Freeview services (channels):

DTG :: DTT Services by Multiplex

Those with grey and a bullet in the "E" (England) column apply. There are 36 services on the PSB multiplexes which leads me to suspect that you are not receiving the COMs, which, for Sudbury, may require a different aerial.

Bryan: And, of course, if you're not spending all your time watching your TV, you will be able to admire the view.

Martin Holland: You are tuned to Wrotham. Looking at your location, the only other transmitter that might serve you is Guildford - I say might as I'm not familiar with the area, although with a roof-top aerial you might be able to receive something that a set-top won't.

Frequencies for BBC national FM transmitters are here:

BBC - Help receiving TV and radio - Transmitters

Guildford doesn't broadcast Classic, so you will probably only get it on 100.9 from Wrotham.

Is there something close to you in the direction of Wrotham such as a building or tree? If it's a directional aerial then it probably could do with pointing ENE-wards to Wrotham rather than at the Reigate transmitter - this could be your issue if it does point in the wrong direction.

If it is an omni-directional vertical dipole then be aware that the mast it is mounted on is likely to screen the signal a bit (cause a null). Make sure that it isn't in the direction you're trying to receive from.

ciaran: Which transmitter were you tuned to for RT (which UHF channel was it coming in on)? The answer to this question might prove useful in working out what might have changed that is causing you not to pick it up any more.

Do you have a second aerial for RT or do you only have the Kilkeel one?

If you only have the Kilkeel one, then maybe you were lucky picking up from elsewhere.

Clermont Carn is on about the same bearing as Kilkeel and is also vertically polarised, so you may be able to pick up from it. Try a manual tune of UHF channel 52.

Prior to switchover, perhaps you were receiving from Greenore which is a bit anti-clockwise of Kilkeel and is also vertically polarised. Breary Park on IoM is co-channel (same frequency) as Greenore, so perhaps it is knocking out your reception (if indeed you did receive from Greenore). For Greenore, try a manual scan on UHF channel 43. Once you've selected 43 don't press the button to scan straight away. Wait and see if it gives an indication as to strength and quality on that channel (some receivers do this).

If you can receive from Greenore, but are picking up too much interference from Breary Park, then you "may" be able to restore it by turning the aerial a bit anti-clockwise so that it points somewhere in between Kilkeel and Greenore.

Failing that, assuming that you don't have one already, a second horizontal aerial pointing to Three Rock, just south of Dublin, might do the trick. You will be able to combine the feeds from the two aerials so that the output of both transmitters can be viewed using the same receiver, or you can keep them separate and use a separate receiver.

Chris Bruce: Film4+1 isn't on Freeview.

How do I get Film4+1? - Channel 4 - 4viewers

Paul: If you use a signal amplifier, whether it be as part of a communal aerial system or to distribute to signals to multiple rooms, its failure is likely to mean no signals coming out.
