Dave Curle: In addition to the points made jb38, it may be worth pointing out that the three COM channels from Knockmore are co-channel with the PSBs of Angus, so you "might" find that you can receive all channels from Knockmore, but that during particular conditions the Angus signals degrade your reception.

Kim Wilman: Have you confirmed that BBC channels are being received from the transmitter to which your aerial faces rather than another one?

The signal strength screen should tell you which UHF channel (frequency) it is tuned to. Skipton transmitter at East Marton is on C39 and Skipton Town, situated at Greatwood is C24, these channels applying for BBC standard definition services (and BBC radio) only.

It may be that your aerial points westwards to Skipton but that Skipton Town is tuned, perhaps because it is found first during the scan. If so then have the aerial out for the first 30% of the scan.

Oliver Grills: Are you sure that your receiver isn't tuned to the wrong transmitter?

From your location Bristol Ilchester Crescent and Mendip are roughly inline with one another, albeit that the former is vertically polarised and the latter horizontally so.

For ITV, Channel 4, Channel 4+1 etc Mendip is on C54 and Ilchester Crescent on C44. For Film4 Mendip is on C52 and Ilchester Crescent C39. The tuned channel number is usually given on the signal strength screen.

.Arthur Perkins: The reason is down to business decisions rather than what is "able".

Freesat and Freeview are two different platforms and the services (Drama, Quest, Yesterday etc) have to pay to be on them.

Yesterday, for example, is available on Sky's subscription service. Presumably it is more worthwhile for it to pay to go on one of the Freeview Commercial multiplexes (which don't broadcast from Machen and many other small transmitters) and to be on Sky. These services have to consider how much it will cost them to go on each platform versus how many extra potential viewers they might get. It may also be the case that the agreement with Sky precludes the service being on Freesat.

Basically the objective for them is profit rather than serving all viewers.

For reasons along the same lines, the Freeview Commercial multiplexes are only carried on the largest transmitters. See here for an explanation:

Londonderry (Northern Ireland) Freeview Light transmitter | ukfree.tv - 10 years of independent, free digital TV advice

The only question is are you in a location that you might be able to receive from a full-service transmitter? Knowledge of your location preferrably in the form of postcode or nearby postcode (e.g. a shop) will allow a prediction as to whether this might be feasible or not.

audrey thomas: If you only get the Public Service channels (i.e. no Dave, Yesterday and so on) then you won't get Drama.

If you do get these channels then you will probably need to carry out a retune in order get Drama on logical channel number 20. You may find that it has been stored in your 800s (i.e. somewhere starting at 800) and if so you may, depending on the design of the device, be able to move it to its correct position. Of course, you may come to the conclusion that a full retune might be the simpler option.

Peter Wickenden: Once a receiver has performed a scan it must "decide" which signals to go with. For whatever reason this TV chooses another transmitter.

I'm puzzled because C23 is used The Wrekin, Bromsgrove and Lark Stone for PSB2 (ITV, Channel 4 etc) and the nearest PSB1/BBCA transmitter on C23 looks too far away. See:

C23 (490.0MHz) after switchover | ukfree.tv - 10 years of independent, free digital TV advice

There is an easy answer and you may kick yourself. The scan runs from channel 21 to 69. Therefore have the aerial unplugged for the first 30% of the scan so as to miss out C23.

Mike Tarbuck: The high ground that is in the way which jb38 mentioned is around the Smuggler's Rest heading westwards. Has there been erection of a development? Streetview photos of May 2012 show the pumping station being built.
