Winter Hill (Bolton, England) transmitter

FREDERICK : Sudbury carries BBC East and ITV Anglia (East).

If you are receiving BBC South East then it is likely to be coming from a transmitter in Kent, probably Bluebell Hill. Crystal Palace carries BBC London.

At switchover, the coverage of Sudbury was complemented by a new transmitter at Rouncefall which provides better coverage in the south of the region. Thus, you may be able to receive Anglia programming with a suitable aerial. Knowledge of your location in the form of postcode, or that of a nearby property such as a shop, will allow some idea of success to be gauged.

Have you confirmed that the problem TV is tuned to the correct transmitter, that be the same as the other?

Check services 1 - BBC One, 3 - ITV, 101 - BBC One HD (if applicable), 10 - ITV3, 11 - Pick, 18 - 4Music.

For each of these read off the UHF channel number it is tuned to (between 21 and 60) or frequency in MHz.

Post the values here and we can tell you which transmitter is being received for each.

FREDERICK : When I say "check", I'm talking about looking on the signal strength screen for each of these services.

Michael: Could the difference in figures be down to percentage of receiving devices versus number of properties with at least one HD receiving device?

Michael: It should say "Could the difference in figures be down to percentage of receiving devices which are HD versus number of *properties* with at least one HD receiving device?"

It is not uncommon for these types of statistics to only count the "main" television or radio and disregard those in other rooms.

Dave Hagen.: Some time in 2014. Digital UK Coverage Checker doesn't give a date yet. Enter your postcode here and click "Detailed view":

Dave Hagen.: Be aware that the new HD multiplex will be out of Group C/D, so if you haven't had your C/D aerial replaced with a wideband one, you could, potentially, need to in order to get these new services.

The stronger the signal is, the more chance you have of getting away with a C/D aerial.

For an explanation of aerial Groups, see:

Aerials, TV Aerial and Digital Aerial

The new multiplex will be on C33. Current Pontop channels range from 49 to 59. A small proportion of Pontop users are unlikely to be able to receive the new multiplex because it's on lower power.

Dave Hagen.: I agree. At that distance and with line-of-sight you shouldn't have a problem at all!

Syd: Unfortunately they're not coming to Redruth transmitter, at least not before the end of 2018.

You should now have BBC Three HD and CBBC HD as they're on all transmitters because they're on the existing country-wide PSB3 multiplex.

If you are on high ground perhaps you can receive them from Caradon Hill. However, the transmission power will be, according to Digital UK, 11.2kW as against 100kW/50kW for the other channels. The multiplex from Caradon will start some time in 2014.

Dave Lindsay: With knowlegde of your location, I think we can safely say you're unlikely to be able to enjoy stable reception from Caradon Hill.

Andrew Rogers: A Freesat box...

Two feeds are required for a recording device so that two channels can be received simulataneous - i.e. to record one channel and watch another or perhaps record two, depending on the design of the device.

If your chosen device has only one satellite input then only connect one cable. The other can be left unused or fed into another receiver.
