Stan: I think I'm going to say "no": there's far more value in meters using Power-line communication for telemetry than in some 1960s technology using Long Wave. Power-line communication - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia etc etc

David: Before the merger, BSB had working encryption technology.
It was the BSB encryption system that caused most of the delays and cost-overruns for that company.
BSB had most of the US movie studios on board, so from 25th March 1990, BSB charged £10 a month for The Movies Channel, with the other four (The Sports Channel, Galaxy, Power Station and Now) being free to air.
BSB and Sky merged to form British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) on 1st September 1993
Sky had been using VideoCrypt since 6th Feb 1989, but not for Sky Movies which encrypted from February 1990.
The Sky Multichannels package started on 1st September 1993.
Sky News has never been encrypted and wasn't part of the package. MTV, VH1, Cartoon Network and TNT were FTA as well.

Stan: "Who would seriously want to listen to radio via TV and burn many times as much energy, for the same result, as a stand-alone radio, whether Analogue or even DAB? "
I'm going to refer to How Many Watts? The Cost of Using your Gadgets and Battery energy storage in various battery sizes and MX1400B4 - General Alkaline - Duracell Direct co uk
Let's see. A pack of 4 x C batteries costs £9. Each one supplies 9.56 Watt-hours (Wh). So the four of them provide 0.03824 kWh.
TV - 32" LCD (Sony Bravia KDL32S3000) uses 115W an hour (0.115kWh) , at a cost of £0.012 per hour.
So, I can watch the TV - even if only for radio - for 750 hours for the cost of a pack of C batteries.
Because, of course, battery power is unbelievably expensive - £235 per kWh compared to mains electric at about £0.104p per kWh.
Yes, batteries do cost 2263 TIMES more to power a device than the good old mains.
(I can't believe that anyone really considers the cost, at a penny an hour, of having the TV on!!!)

Rob: Yes, I don't know how that slipped into the system. It's fixed now, thanks for pointing it out.

SeeMoreDigital: he did very, very specifically use the words "as a stand-alone radio".
The radio stations have a screen saver option. It's red+0 on Freeview and green on Freesat.

Bizman: If you watch on ITV HD (or ITV+1) you will see a different region because ITV has not implemented (due to costs) all of the regional news programmes on +1 and HD.
