Bernie: You are predicted to receive all the services with full quality at the moment, so you might be well advised to have your aerial installation checked.

However, I would shop around as you don't need anything special and £300 is very much at the high end of what you should consider paying.

Dave: Thanks for that.

I do recall a college of mine, who had spent four years at university doing an engineering degree, and hence technically "an engineer" being generally annoyed by "technicians" (and other operatives) being called "engineers" when they had no engineering qualifications.

ET: No, without a subscription you can't record/pause/play with a Sky+ box.

However, you can just swap a Sky+ box for a Freesat+ or Freesat+HD box, where you can record/pause/play for no charge.
