Ipswich can get interference from continental tv stations but if the problem is recent I suspect a problem with your aerial or its connections or plugs. (possibly a source of interference such as a new phone mast may be the culprit. But your aerial system being faulty is more likely .)
Your area is a bit complicated for best reception. See the digital coverage checker as Mike suggests. You could get rock solid basic BBC and ITV channels with a small possibly loft aerial (vertical polarisation) from the Ipswich relay transmitter . the other channels probably need a good outdoor aerial for Sudbury . Idealy one with low pick up to the east (rejects continental signals ) A few channels (that you might want ) are better from dover . But having two or three aerials is probably for experimenters and enthusiasts !

There should be a very strong signal Mike. Sounds like there is an aerial or connection fault. If replacing aerial I would recommend a log type as it covers all present and future channels.

At that location there should be a very strong signal . Almost any outdoor aerial should work . Though these days a log (wideband) aerial would be recommended if installing new in a good signal area. I think there is a fault in your present aerial its cable or plugs . The loss of signal is why you cant get HD which requires a slightly higher signal quality than standard tv.

Rob . because you can receive several transmitters it might be that particular tv could have trouble selecting the right frequency for a given channel. Maybe not so likely with a modern tv . But to check I would use the tuning menu to verify that the set is tuned to the correct UHF channels (not freeview channels).

I agree with Mike that too much signal for a sensitive set is a possibility . Perhaps one way to temporarily test on a lower signal is to connect the aerial without the amplifier.

David . HD needs a bit stronger signal than SD . So its possible that there is a small fault in your aerial/cable/connections . Not big enough problem to knock out SD but making the signal too weak for HD.

Nigel. reception should be very good at your location. (see coverage checker) I think if all channels are knocked out it suggests very strong nearby interference . Could be tricky to sort out . Possibly an anti phone signal filter might fix it . But it could be you are very near a phone mast . However check with neighbours to see if they get the same problem . If they don't then I would check your aerial system . You may even need a small attenuator in the aerial lead if the signal is too strong .

Celine . It is unusual to loose standard signals yet have HD ok. I suspect that your tv is partially tuned to the wrong transmitter . This can happen if youre near several transmitters . The auto tuning might pick the wrong one . You may need to do a manual tune on the UHF channels listed by Mike .

james . maybe they transmit with a method your receiver does not like. Talksport is also available live on satellite and online.
