Below are all of Chris S's postings, with the most recent are at the bottom of the page.If poor reception is due to a transmitter power reduction or atmospheric conditions or aerial fault it is recommended not to retune as if the signal is poor the set may not tune in all channels. If your set is not designed for HD there is no point tuning in hd channels on an external box . However you can get an HD picture with such a box if the tv is 'HD ready' . Of course a modern tv will have an HD tuner so will not need an external box.
A free sat box can be used in place of a sky box as the dish will work for either. Personally I use a 'free to air ' satellite box as these are cheaper. But these boxes have a reduced or no on screen programme guide.
Note I have found some recorder boxes a little less sensitive than tvs and HD always needs a bit stronger signal than SD.

John there is clearly A problem with your aerial , cable or aerial amplifier. The transmitted signal has not been reduced recently . Reception is still good here on the north Norfolk coast . Another possibility is interference from a source such as a new phone transmitter ,It helps if we know your town or preferably post code.

John two of the channels you mention have been reduced in power . But that was last year .Not recently .the other channel is not now used by Tacolneston. Perhaps you are getting signals from another transmitter . If you were getting good reception until recently that suggests that there is minor fault reducing reception such as rain in a connection. Obviously a small reduction in sensitivity will knock out the weakest channels.

Mr Walsh . the coverage checker shows a strong signal at your location. You are inland so should not get much continental interference . I wonder if your aerial system is too sensitive .(overloading the tv) . You should not need an amplifier . I would remove it if you have one and you may need a small attenuator to reduce the signal further . Without an amplifier you should aim for a signal strength reading of no more than about 80%.

Steve make sure you are using the right tuning mode . Some Freeview boxes have a complete retune mode and an 'add new channel mode '

Gary . That's likely to be interference . Ideally we need a post code so we can check if you should have good reception xx

Earl Thompson . I agree with Chris . You will definitely need a good aerial amplifier near the aerial . Even then you will l be susceptible to some continental interference . I would recommend going to freesat for a reliable signal. You could have the SKY dish LNB changed to have an output to connect the freesat receiver too or install a separate dish just for freesat.

two aerials are allowed in most cases . normally these will be a terrestrial and a satellite types . But can be two dishes .
you can have upto four on a large building over 15 metres high !

john Clark . Normallly in the Ipswich area reception is good from the Sudbury transmitter . You maybe in an awkward spot where you get better signals from Tacolneston . So you could be getting signals from Sudbury , Tacolneston and a local relay! its possible that different tvs in your house are tuned to different transmitters! We really need a full postcode to help further .
Note that bad reception areas are susceptible to interference from local transmitters and high pressure effects.

John Clark. I think you should be able to get good reception with a decent aerial and roof mounted amplifier most of the time . Reception strength is about the same in my area and this is the case . THough I agree with Mike that freesat would be a good choice in such an area to virtually guarantee perfect reception.
