Read this: Digital Radio UK starts to promote DAB+ radio upgrade – RadioToday

Summary: Currently, although the majority of new digital radios available at retail are DAB compatible, industry estimates that only 30-40 of DAB digital radios in homes will receive DAB stations, highlighting the need to communicate that there are now many stations available that can only be heard with a DAB compatible radio, or by listening online or on a smart speaker. Digital Radio UK's summer communications programme also features new creative supporting in-car digital radio upgrade. - radiotoday.co.uk

Wrong horse, wrong course.

So now : *if* we get an indoor signal, we toss our DAB receivers into landfill and buy DAB+ replacements.

Too many platforms. They all cost money.

DAB+ could be justified as the *final* platform if our money is spent on 99% nationwide *indoor* coverage.

DAB is a total mess in the U.K. Poor coverage meaning indoor reception is normally annoying and intermittent. We've stuck in the main to DAB while the rest of the World moves forward with DAB +.
My main personal gripe is the number of stations in Mono, we waited years for FM to offer Stereo and I find it insulting that any provider offers a mono music program, there's even one now on DAB.+ in mono.

Unfortunately it's all down to what the commercial operators are prepared to pay!

Scotland may now be the poorest served UK nation for BBC regional DAB radio services, half the Scottish land mass has no local DAB multiplex signals to carry these services.
A get well plan to fix this problem is allowing a separate frequency block in Scotland for BBC National DAB with its superior signal coverage. Then upgrade all existing channels to DAB+ and add the regional services, with part time auxiliary secondary services for local opt outs.
This enhancement would also allow the Asian Network and Radio 4 Extra services to upgrade to stereo.

The fly in the ointment would be to convince the BBC in London that real broadcasting devolution can be a good idea!

I'd guess that people in some parts of Devon and Cornwall would not agree with you regarding poor reception, as well as some other rural areas of the UK.
DAB+ services have not long started on the Channel Islands (including the BBC) so it's possible that this may progress to other areas in due course.

Chris.SE: Not disputing the issue about local DAB reception not-spots in the West Country, but stating half the landmass of Scotland is outwith the reception area of a local DAB multiplex and Scotland in size is approximately 34% percent of the entire size of the UK! Meaning, local DAB reception being a poor show in Scotland after a near generation of DAB transmitter roll out!
Anyway, I have already detailed on how BBC Scottish regional radio coverage could be improved by regional service carriage transfer from local DAB to BBC National DAB, albeit, it would require a separate frequency block.
