Freeview "transmitter" name changed

One confusing aspect of Freeview reception is being sorted out.

One confusing aspect of Freeview reception is being sorted out.
published on UK Free TV

One of the most confusing aspects of digital terrestrial reception over the last decade - and it was ten years on 15th November 2008 - has been the "transmitter name" problem.

The design of the Freeview network allows the name of a transmitter to be provided as part of the digital transmission.

However, this is only done on a regional basis, so any relay transmitters carry the same name as the main one.

For example, Brighton's Whitehawk Hill transmitter transmits the name "Rowridge", 86km west-southwest of Brighton and Hove.

Reports have reached UK Free TV that transmitter parameter is being changed to the name of the region, so Pontop Pike now transmits "North East", for example.

This will help reduce the confusion when installing in some regions and nations.

You can still use Find a Freeview transmitter by frequency - ukfree.tv - independent digital television and switchover advice, since 2002 to find the actual transmitter you are using.

I don't care what the transmitter is called - I'd be happy to know when this lousy transmitter is going to provide a signal strong enough to receive more than the dreary old BBC junk. For a while I had great Freeview, then there was a retune and channels disappeared, then there was another retune and more channels disappeared. Since November many of them have been back, periodically, but in stuttering and pixillated form. Film 4? Food channel? That shopping channel on 22? Russian news? Al Jazz? I used to get all these before the hideous retunes. Are they ever coming back? (And on the subject of confusion, why do channels have 2 numbers eg 13 on the signal strength page is called channel 24 and also 13 - what's Joe Public supposed to make of that?)

Chris -- Thanks fior your response but I was just giving you the chance to correct the data on the
Whitehawk Hill page.
You show COM4 being on C33 --- it is now on C32
You show COM6 being on C32 --- it is now on C33
You show LBN being on C54 --- it is now on C40
PSBs1,2,3, COM5 are all shown on the correct UHF channels

Bob Higham:

The site owner is the only one that can update the information. All we can do on the relevant transmitter page, for anyone reading or having a query, is point out that the information hasn't been updated and what the correct information is.

So how do I tell the site owner that the information he is showing, is incorrect ?

You don't need to, he knows, he hasn't had time to do all the updates necessary with the 700MHz clearance program along with the all too frequent channel changes when broadcasters move their channels to different multiplexes, rename them or change them. When he'll do the updates is anyone's guess, there are 1100+ transmitters in the UK & the Whitehawk Hill page is not the only one that needs updating.

The best place to get up-to-date information (generally) is the Freeview site Freeview | All your favourite TV shows, all in one place and all for free
