Hi.
I am renting a room that has 2 sky leads connected to a fully subscribed and active wall mounted external dish.
If I buy a second hand sky plus hd box with no white viewing card, will I be able to watch and record the same freewiew channels that I currently have with an ordinary freeview recorder.

jb383:23 PM
Derek: I am not quite clear about what you are meaning by stating a "fully subscribed and active wall mounted dish", as the subscription is paid for by the owner of the box and with the charges being dependant on the package subscribed to.
However if you purchase a second hand Sky+ HD box you will only be able to use the recording side of the device if a £10.00 per month subscription is taken out with Sky other wise the box will just operate like a standard version, although you will still be view the most of (but not all of) the free channels you referred to as well as BBC1 HD, BBC HD, ITV1 HD, Luxe HD, C4 HD, however Five HD currently requires a Sky Freesat Viewing Card, this latter info being from Sky.
The reason for stating "most of" being that Freeview has a few odd channels that are not broadcast on either Freesat or Sky, and of course vice-versa.

We have been having problems for a few days.
We can now not get any Sky channels at all.
we have rebooted the boy but still nothing, it costs a lot of money to have Sky TV and when you get no service it is not very good service.

jb381:30 PM
Roberta Gollop: Satellite TV whether Sky or Freesat is more reliable than terrestrial services because for 99.9% of the time the signal is always there, and so your problem is either being caused by the dish having been accidentally moved slightly (very!) out of alignment or alternatively your box has developed a fault.
The question being, does the dish belong to you or are you on a communal dish system?
What type of Sky box are you using? - Standard - Sky+ (white box?) or Sky+ HD?

jb38: I'm sorry but an proper working aerial doesn't stop working if it is raining heavy or covered in snow, if you want multiple points it is cheaper than a satellite so there is pros and cons to everything .

J
jb3811:46 PM
Mazbar: The posters question was purposely replied to in the manner done to emphasise a point in relation to the content of the posting, being that unlike in the case of problems with terrestrial reception where a multitude of things can be the cause of the problem starting with the box itself, the aerial system being used, or even the atmospheric conditions applying at the time, in the case of satellite reception any problems being experienced are "always" associated with the receiving equipment and not the signal being beamed down, as its always there.
However now that you have brought up the subject regarding the reliability of Freeview Vs Freesat or Sky, although I am well aware that heavy rain or even snow on an aerial will not kill reception (my logs being covered in snow with virtually no degradation of the signal) whereas it can do with satellite, the percentage of downtime that heavy rain / snow causes to satellite reception is quite insignificant compared to the level of problems that can, and are in many cases experienced by Freeview viewers when residing in areas that are not even remotely near to being line-of-sight from a transmitter, and even many that are can still experience problems with occasional bursts CCI from another distant transmitter on the same frequency dependant on the current atmospheric conditions applying at the time.
Satellite reception is virtually guaranteed to be reliable for 99% of the time, this being something that in many cases cannot be said where terrestrial is involved, albeit that I fully appreciate that many do enjoy consistently good reception by being located in areas conducive to receiving a good signal.
Of course even in cases where satellite reception is killed off for a few minutes by heavy rain etc, the situation can be improved no end by Southern users using zone 2 dishes and making sure that the dish is perfectly aligned, and not just approximately as I have found on checks made shortly after an installation.

I have a Sky+HD box, if i cancel my subscription, can the box still be used as a recordable HD freeview/freesat box ?

jill: No, as Sky will disable the recording / playback side of the box at around the same time scale as they do your ability to view Sky's dedicated package channels.
You could of course take out a new subscription with Sky @ £10.25 per month for the dubious privilege of enabling you to use the recording / playback side of the box, however many consider it a better bet to purchase a subscription free Freesat PVR and which is totally compatible for use with the existing dish.

t shreenan: If you want to retain Freeview reception in the bedrooms as well as being able to via Sky, then the main input from your Freeview aerial will be connected into the Sky boxes aerial input socket.
You then connect the "feed" thats presently used to supply the three bedrooms with a Freeview signal into your Sky boxes RF1 output socket, then provided that the Sky box is powered Freeview should still be receivable as before.
Finally switch one of the bedroom TV's over from DVB to analogue and then proceed to carry out a rescan on the TV whilst its set on analogue to pick up the Sky boxes RF modulator, storing the analogue channel on the TV once complete.
By the way, make sure that a channel has been selected on the Sky box before carrying out the analogue scan on the bedroom TV.
You then repeat this procedure with the other two TV's.

emz's: mapE's Freeview map terrainE's terrain plot wavesE's frequency data E's Freeview Detailed Coverage
emz : There are no "Freeview" channels on your Sky box because it receives signals from a satellite whereas Freeview is the brand name of the terrestrial system.
An aerial, irrespective of how great it's amplified, will not allow you to watch the output of the Sky box; it doesn't work that way.
If you wish to watch the output of the Sky box in another room, then this will likely be via the normal aerial lead. The TV you are using will need to have an analogue tuner built-in. Analogue is the system used before digital (i.e. before switchover to Freeview).
Rather than running a cable from your lounge to your bedroom, run one from the dish to the bedroom and get a (cheap) Freesat receiver.
Or, alternatively, install a terrestrial aerial for the bedroom (to use with the Freeview receiver built in to the TV).

emz you have a plethora of possible Freeview sources at good strengths so you may be able to receive it with an indoor aerial - amplified or not. try a "Sketchley loop" (wire coathanger pulled into a square) or a wire in the coax socket centre.
The only way you just might get freeview from your sky dish is from the cable and the lump of metal. As an aerial it is the wrong sort pointing the wrong way.
Ask your neighbouts what they do. Or a local ae installer might tell you what you need - and how much! (LL145HD)

caroline: Confirm that your receiver is tuned to the correct transmitter. As Einstein said, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
I looked on Streeview and all the aerials I saw face Sudbury. They are horizontal and pointing west.
The Felixstowe relay transmitter is in the Ranelagh Car Park, aerials pointing to this are vertical.
Refer to this page:
http://www.dtg.org.uk/ind…html
Sudbury broadcasts all channels (shown on the above page), i.e. PSBs+COMs. Felixstowe broadcasts PSBs only.
Bring up the signal strength screen on the following and check they are tuned correctly:
PSB1 | BBC One | Sudbury=C44 | Felixstowe=C45
PSB2 | ITV | Sudbury=C41 | Felixstowe=C51
PSB3 | BBC One HD | Sudbury=C47 | Felixstowe=C53

Hi,
I have a sky+ hd box.
on 1 of the signal input strength and quality bars, I get a constant good signal and quality.
on the second input the strength and quality fluctuates and on occasions signal is lost all together, mainly on the channel 5 programs.
Has anyone got an idea what my problem could be?
I have checked coax and f-connectors and they are in good order!
link to this comment |
J
jb3811:51 AM
adrian: If you can receive Ch5 on the LNB1 input OK but not if you swap the two inputs over then that input feed from the dish is defective, this either being caused by a bad connection on one of the "F" connectors or the very common problem of water having entered the LNB's "F" connector.
Have you tried swapping the inputs over? or are you just reporting what you see on the signal strength bars?
link to this comment |
A
adrian12:01 PM
Yes have tried swapping inputs, my problem mainly occurs in the evenings.
Was wondering whether it could be a skew angle problem as signal quality on second input only 50% while the other is close to 100%
link to this comment |
J
jb381:04 PM
adrian: Provided that the problem moved from LNB2 over to LNB1 when you swapped the inputs over? and that it did NOT stay on the boxes LNB2 as this could indicate a problem on the boxes LNB2 tuner, but though your tests should really be carried out on the boxes LNB1 input as LNB2 is basically used for recording purposes, and so if Ch5 is perfectly OK when on LNB1's input then the skew setting is perfectly OK.
Maybe you could confirm if this is the case or not, that being Ch5 being OK on LNB1 input?
link to this comment |
J
jb383:30 PM
adrian: Just to clarify on a point regarding the signal checks made, when dealing with Sky boxes these indications do NOT represent the channel that the box was maybe sitting on when you went into the check menu, as the levels seen are taken from the default transponder used for the EPG listings, and so any deficiency that might be seen in the levels can even be worse on some channels that use other transponders, this being why its not really advisable to have less than a 55% indication of either strength or quality.
It should also be noted that if the quality is less than the strength then that generally indicates that the dishes alignment requires slight adjustment, this usually always being in the horizontal plane

denise : Considering the circumstances that the dish is being used under then the very first thing to suspect would be that the dish has been accidentally moved, as even the very minutest of movement of a magnitude that an experienced eye would not even detect is enough to knock the signal off.
Is the dish mounted on a pole attached to the caravan? or does it sit on a tripod? because irrespective of what might apply the dish alignment will require checking.

I live in an area covered by the midhurst transmitter but though 4 of the Muxes come through quite strongly, the other 2, the ones with the bbc channels, no longer do (they worked fine before switchover). The 746 & 754 frequencies do not tune at all, though I can get channels from the more distant row Ridge or Hannington transmitters (just somewhat less consistent).
Is this an issue with my setup or just coincidence? It does seem strange the other frequencies come through perfectly but this set do not.

Palmer: MuxBBCA changed frequency to C50 and ArqA to C49, so receivers still tuned to the old frequencies will have lost reception of standard def BBC channels and Sky News etc.You will need to re-tune to the new frequencies to restore reception of these channels. If your tuner does not automatically replace the channel list as it scans you will need to delete the old information first, either by using a channel delete facility if available, or by doing a factory re-set, after which re-tuning should store all channels on the correct frequencies. If there is a problem with channels from Yorkshire or Wales being stored instead of the required Winter Hill channels, it will be necessary to do a manual tune on each of the Winter Hill frequencies after first clearing the channel list.

If you cannot get reception from Winter Hill, then you are stuck with the repeater transmitter at East Marton, meaning that you only get a handful of channels, most of which are rubbish of course.
I am fed up with unplugging, re-plugging, re-tuning, while the BBC are doing their re-engineering work. Why should I pay for my bandwidth to be robbed in order to facilitate 4G which I do not need nor will ever use.

It is unfortunate for both the people of Blackpool and the Ladies and Gentlemen of Lytham St Annes that radio signals propagate well over water and less well over the mountains of Leyland and the Longton hills.
But an aerial pointed at Winter Hill a bit S of E tather the MyP a bit W of S should keep you on trach so long as it is well directional.
Either way, your Freeview Tuner probably has picked up theproper Lancastrial channels and put them in the "Duplicates" section - usually 900s but can vary. Use "Channel Arrangement" to switch what yoiu want to 1 2 3 4

Linda : Are you meaning that (1) on your remote control gives BBC Wales likewise (3) results in ITV1 Wales? because if you do then that could suggest that you are picking up the Moel Y Parc transmitter even although the possibility of picking it is only indicated as being "poor" in your locality.
Should the aforementioned apply then carry out a signal strength check whilst on (1) and note the channel number seen associated with the strength / quality, if its Ch45 then that's Moel Y Parc, and with (2) likely to be Ch39.
But though I would suggest that you carry out a "factory reset" on your TV / box, this also called "default setting" or "first time installation" before you carry out any further retuning procedures.
I would also turn off "automatic updates" should you see that mentioned in the set up menu, because if you have carried out the correct procedure to "manually" tune in mux Ch50 and Ch59 then they should not have changed.
It would also be of assistance if you provided the model number of your TV or box.

Indeed, I then had all of the previously affected channels working again - for several minutes to several hours. Then they disappeared again. This has happened repeatedly since the change over. Nor am I alone in this. Several people in my immediate area are similarly affected. Perhaps we should resign ourselves to constant rescans from now until the engineers finally admit that something is WRONG?

Steve P: Well I have to admit that I hadn't actually carried out a Google earth check as I was more concerned with finding out what station Linda was picking up that resulted on her having BBC Wales, although I do have distant knowledge of Lytham St Annes by having spent a few holiday breaks in the Fleetwood area and having toured the coastline down to Southport from there.
But though considering what you mentioned about the Moel Y Parc transmitter being virtually line of sight with Lytham its rather odd why DUK's trade view reception predictor gives such poor indications for its reception at Lytham, an indication which is obviously incorrect (and indeed as many are) otherwise Linda's TV / box would not have been picking it up in preference to Winter Hill even although its on a lower mux channel, as going by what's seen indicated for Moel Y Parc suggests that the level received would have been under the threshold level for reception in the Lytham area, albeit obviously not!

D Matthews: You possibly reside in an area where Freesat might have provided the perfect solution to the problem, that is providing you are not facing into a tree in a S/S Easterly direction and you can accommodate a satellite dish, as satellite reception is for 99.9% of the time totally reliable.

I have a T.V. LG and it is set up in German. I want to re-tune it as I am in the Winter Hill area but cannot understand the menu as it is in German. Can you help. I have successfully re-tuned my main T.V. which gives instructions in English. Help!!!

Maggie do you have the instructions? If not, google for and download them. Then read across from English to German.
One of the setup options is probably language play from the MENU button. "Sprache" is German for Language.
Was it German bought?

jb38 - my guess is that the prediction sites make no allowance for better propagation over water rather than land. You can SEE Snowdon from Lytham. Doubt if you can see Winter Hill!

Steve P: Yes quite so!, as although DUK's predictions can in certain instances be reasonably accurate, however in other cases I feel that either rose tinted glasses are being worn or alternatively patches are being worn over the eyes because of just how far out some of the predictions given can be, and that is even when taking into account the fact of it being exceedingly difficult for anyone to determine exactly where a UHF RF signal will or will not reach because of the variables involved.
That said though I do appreciate all the other info they provide such as TX powers and channel numbers used by same, saves a lot of cross checking and so the site does serve a very valuable purpose.

D Matthews - how have you had your new aerial set up? If by a professional it should work.
If d-i-y - are you adequately skilled and equipped? I doubt it.
If you post your postcode we can perhaps help.

Hi
I have lost BBCA and ARQA multiplexes since 10th April 2013 on a number of set top boxes around the house. The post code is SK11 0HX and we are served by Winter Hill. I have tried factory resets and retune but that has not worked. I checked the signal intensity and quality for channels 49 and 50 and intensity was around 49% for both. Signal Intensity was 0% most of the time, but on Channel 50 it jumped from 0 to 30 and 0 to 97%. Does this imply some kind of interference?

AK87- you say "a number of set top boxes" does this mean there are boxes working ok ?
what sort of distribution system are you using?
is it powered or not and can you bypass it to use one box straight from the aerial ?
how many tv points do you have ?

Check if everyting plugged in properly. Unplug and replug.
Look at your aerial. Ids it still there? Still pointing where it used to?
See if your box will work somewhere else.

Aidan - I know very little about Satellite TV but think it most unlikely that you will be able to get USA Satellite TV, as their satellites are a quarter of the way round the world from us and pointing downwards.

Following the re-tune of Winter Hill All channel 50 stations are giving very poor reception, signal is about 75% but quality is between 3% & 10 %. I have retuned using all the ideas given on the site but no change. Having tuned in some of the neighbours sets I know they are not having the same problem. Some years ago Ofcom installed a filter to stop interference from a local radio ham. Could this be the problem? I have tried to contact Ofcom but it is impossible.

Having bought a Panasonis TV with 3D and
glasses I have yet to find a programme
transmitted in 3D!.Never mentioned in TV schedules.Seems like I will have to buy
a Blue Ray player if I want 3D.Is that right?
link to this comment |
dennis: Only the Sky 3D (Sky channel 217) channel carries 3D programmes.
Movies on Sky 3D - Sky Movies HD
There have been occasional programmes on the now-defunct BBC HD channel. It is not yet known where BBC 3D test services (such as BBC News - BBC announces Doctor Who 3D special ) will go.

dennis: Correct - unless you have Sky 3D or a Blu Ray player (and they are pretty much all 3D these days)/Play Station 3, then 3D Freeview is pretty few and far between (the Wimbeldon Finals, The Olympics opening and the Strictly final from 2011 are the only ones the BBC have done, as far as I'm aware).
You can of course turn 2D into 3D, which might be interesting, but its not going to be as good. However, 3D Blu-Ray players are available for £70, and 3D films cost very little more than the 2D only versions.
3D is not the reason to buy a TV, but it is a mark of a higher quality screen. If you've bought an ET5, you've got a 300hz screen, and a GT50 you've got at least a 600hz screen - the higher the hz, the better the picture.
Colin - how is your TV/sound system set up? If you've got the digital opitical output bypassing the TV and going directly to a sound system, you can cause a delay.

colin - what is wrong is that they are out of sync.
To cure it; change to another channel and back; another source and boack, or powercycle the lot.

Now that winter seems finally over and we are getting some sunshine, Sandy Heath is begining to crackup again. Am I in for yet another summer of practically zero Freeview service?
What is being done about co-channel interference? I have yet to get anyone to admit there is a problem.

Thanks for you help.
The out of sync is not on all channels usually just one channel others seem ok.
Retuning does not work, by the way is this the same as a powercycle?
We get signal from Waltham.
It does clear its self eventually.

I have elderly relations in Christchurch near Bournemouth on South Coast they make extensive use of Freeview services but have a routine (or is it regular?) problem with interference at precise times of day resulting in complete loss of service or at least pixelation and sound loss. This lasts for several minutes and iof I recall is araound 16:30 PM or was until clocks changed which now have changed the time by an hour. Can anyone throw some light on this or do others suffer? Can it be stopped or investigated as it has apparently gone on for some years. My relations aerial and set up was by a competent local installer.

Following Steve P's advice found a link to RTIS which has a diagnostic tool in the form of a form. It appears to be a mix of BBC & Ofcom. I await their reply.
Many thanks.

Toni2: It seems pretty likely that this is some interference due to it occurring at the same time. Further, whatever is the source operates by timer whose clock does not follow Summer Time. Granted, you may not even realise it uses a clock, but you will when you find out what it is!
I suggest that you use a battery-powered AM (LW or MW) radio to try and track down the source of the interference. Tune it away from a station. Listen for a noise appearing at the same time as the TV reception goes. Then walk around with the radio to see where the noise is the loudest.
Spinning the radio around should result in the noise getting louder and quieter. If you hold the radio with its front facing you and turn around until it gets to its loudest. When it is at its loudest, you know that the noise is coming from anywhere in front of you, behind you, above you (or indeed below you).
Conversely, when you turn around (or turn the radio) so that the noise is at its quietest then you know that the noise is coming from either side of the radio.
Turning the main incoming power switch off (on the distribution board) whilst the noise can be heard on the radio may be helpful. If the noise stops then you know that the cause is something that is powered from the mains and is in your relations' house. If it doesn't stop then either it is something in a neighbour's house or is in your relations' house but is powered from some other source such as batteries (e.g. electronics associated with solar panels, electronic gas/electricity meters). Try and pinpoint where the noise is coming from using the radio.
