Updated - changes to Freeview channel numbers this week on September 19th 2012
As an update to the original plan (see Freeview channel numbers change on September 19th 2012) - the changes to Freeview this week will now be less extensive than planned, as two channels have appealed the changes.
The main changes are shown in this diagram below. You will need to do a "first time installation" to ensure the channel numbers are correct. See My Freeview box has no EPG ... or the channel line up is wrong if you don't know what to do. Another option is the list of retune instruction leaflets and manuals on the Freeview Retune - list of manuals page.
The changes are now:
- Dave and Yesterday swap over to 12 and 19
- Really and Gold (subscription) swap over to be 17 and 20
- The Food Network moves to 48 (from 49)
- The Jewellery channel moves to 49 (from 60)
- Local TV services are reserved 8 (England and Northern Ireland) and 45 (Wales and Scotland)
- RTE1, RTE2 and TG4 are reserved 51, 52 and 53 - these start on a special "mini multiplex" for Northern Ireland on Wednesday 24th October 2012.
- Argos TV starts on 55
- Text services move to 200-224: 200 BBC Red Button; 201 Teletext Holidays; 202 Rabbit; 203 Gay Rabbit; 204 1-2-1 Dating; 205 Mail Travel; 206 Sky Text.
- MHEG services move to 225-299: 225 VISION; 226 CCTV; 227 Sports Tonight; 228 Connect 1; 229 Connect 2; 230 Connect 3; 231 Racing TV; 232 The Space.
HD channels move to 101-120 The "normal" order of channels is restored to HD: 101 BBC One HD; 102 BBC HD; 103 ITV1 HD or STV HD or UTV HD; 104 Channel 4 HD; 105 S4C Cirlun. - (Not 100% sure this is confirmed)

Bill, you should not have any channels at 800 and above.
The best way to get rid of all the unwanted channels and start again is to do a factory reset. This will remove all saved channels, your favourites and programmed schedule (what you set to record) but it's the only way.
Once you have reset the unit choose 'Manual Tune' and just tune in the 6 channels for your transmitter (only 5 needed if the unit does not work in HD mode). The channel numbers can be found on this site. Provided you have a reasonable signal this will work.
One of the reasons we are all having problems is that now most areas have completely changed over to Digital the transmitter power has been increased and we are now picking up signals from more than one transmitter. I can foresee a lot more problems in the future because of this.
Most people just do a 'Auto tune' when updating but this is going to cause problems for many.
Technically using an aerial attenuator and setting it until only the strongest signal is recognised would be one answer but not practical for the average consumer.

Out of interest what is the purpose of swopping services such as Dave and Yesterday to each other's frequencies?

Absolutely no idea; annoying that we have so many retunes to do. Thought that was it a couple of months ago.

Thanks Dave Lindsay & MikeG but this is the only one of my Freeview TVs that is playing up. It has no factory reset or manual tune. It doesn't display any channel numbers as it scans, just a yellow line as it scans first for digital channels, then analogue ones.
The only scanning options are "Channel Scan" and "Update Scan", the first must remove the existing channels before scanning and the second just adds to the existing ones. There is no selection of country in the scanning menu, only a language selection in another menu. Thanks anyway. Bill.

Bill the only way I can think of in that case is to get an aerial attenuator and stick that in while tuning; it should only get the strongest then. You can remove it when the tuning's done.
There are loads on ebay just under £3 including P&P. I'd try a 9dB or 12dB to start with but it's hit and miss whether it'll work. Yo can start with a low value 3dB and work up, and also daisy chain them. At that price it's worth a try.
Mike.

couple of days ago did auto re-tune on my freeview - can no longer get BBC 1 Look North
from Leeds studio (ie Christa Ackroyd presenter) - but get all news from Newcastle area which is of little interest. Can I retrieve?

marlene james: This is because your receiver has tuned to the signal from Bilsdale instead (for at least BBC channels).
Which transmitter should you be receiving from (and to which your aerial faces)?
If it is Emley Moor, then simply run the automatic tuning scan with the aerial unplugged for the first 30%. This misses scanning of channels used by Bilsdale, although if Emley Moor isn't your target, then the workaround may differ.

Harrogate
I live in Harrogate HG1 2BL had the first retune12/09 and got more channels than previously had, did the 2nd retune on 26th and now have 32 channels only. Looks to be only the BBC channels off 23 + 26 + 29. I get signal from bilsdale. Even digitaluk web site confirms this. What was the point in switching as it is a backward step? Is there anything I can do - new ariel, point it to emly moor?

John Constantine: There are a number of factors and things to appreciate.
Firstly, the COM channels do not have as great a coverage as the PSBs (23, 26 and 29 from Bilsdale). This difference is down to many small relays not carrying the COMs and those that carrying them at lower power and perhaps having other restrictions.
Basically what this means is that some fringe viewers of Bilsdale may only receive the PSBs and others may have to go a bit further to get the COMs as well.
I believe that you would have good reception were it not for the higher-ground at Bilton being in the way. If it weren't, then you could probably see the transmitter which would mean excellent reception.
Harlow Hill is why reception from Emley Moor is impossible or difficult at your location.
For COM reception from Bilsdale an aerial may need replacing:

If yours is still a Group A one, then this probably needs replacing with a Group K one (which is Group A for the PSBs + Group B for the COMs).
