Our digital signal for ITV has disappeared in the last week - can you tell me why and what I can do to restore it

Our digital signal for ITV has disappeared in the last week -
published on UK Free TV

Sometimes people experience problems with the ITV/C4 multiplex (and also the one that carries five) because of the different transmission mode that allows more channels to be carried, but reduces the effective signal strength.

Freeview modes

This can sometimes cause problems when the weather changes (due to the inversion effect).

If you rescan for channels on your box and don't get the ITV/C4 services restored, then you may need to get a new Class I aerial to get reception all the time. However, you should check your cables and connections are in good order first.

Anthony Chiocchi: Try replacing the cable from the wall socket to your TV first as it may be that the plug has become damaged (quite common, especially if the plug is situated where it easily be knocked). If that doesn't resolve it, ask your landlord or management company to get someone out to check and replace the socket. If the aerial has always been in the loft there is no reason why it shouldn't continue to give good reception provided all the cabling etc is in good condition.

StevensOnln1: Thanks for coming back to me. I will try your advice.

When we moved into the flat there was no aerial, so I put one in the loft, this was about 3 years ago and 90% of the time all signal is fine, other times when I play around with the cable I can get it to work but I suppose this could also be damaging the cable/socket even though I get the signal to work for a while.

I'll come back and let you know how I get on.

Cheers again,
Ant

I get great reception with just an indoor Ariel But recently Utv and other Itc channels just vanished I have all Bbc and Channel 4 as always but nothing like the number which just dropped off . Utterly ids Belfast based but recently taken over by ITV. Don't know if the moving of technical services might have done this

Eugene MC Geehan : There have been no technical changes to the broadcast of UTV on Freeview since the channel was sold to ITV plc. Please provide a postcode so we can see which transmitter you're using and offer further advice.

Eugene MC Geehan :

An indoor aerial, in the same room as the TV, has always been poor - even in the days of VHF 405 line TV!

An aerial in the loft would always be better but one outside the roof is always best, if possible.

Ray:

Retuning is a very bad idea when one channel has been lost! All it does is possibly loose more channels!

Please check all your aerial cables and connections, corrosion/oxidation of the contacts is a common cause of problems like yours.

Also put your post code into the Digital UK Coverage Checker at Digital UK - Coverage checker and look at the channels used by your best transmitter. Then manually check that the TV has tuned to the correct channels. Only manually retune those that are incorrect.
