There are several factors that use these boxes to "crash":

  • low quality input signal from the aerial
  • sudden electrical noise (such as from a refrigerator or DIY equipment)
  • failed self-updates

Like all digital computer equipment, the Freeview boxes are all designed to diagnose problems during the period after they are turned on.

If you have equipment that is failing more than you expect, you can use your rights under the "Sale of Goods Act 1974 (as amended)" to demand a working replacement within 12 months of purchase.

The answer you have given here seems completely ingenuous. How is it that TV sets with built-in Freeview tuners don't either freeze or switch themselves on and off, whereas all the stand-alone boxes that I have ever come across do? Is there in fact one on the market with decent software that does the job it's supposed to do?

David Gardiner: The switching on and off
happens at pre-set times according to the make of box.It is to update the EPG with the
forthcoming programme schedules,so that when
you use it later, you will not have to wait
for the data to download.

Why can't you alter the timing, given these boxes are not exclusively sold in the UK.

john: I guess you've turned the power off at the mains for a bit and restarted the box?

It's probably worth checking the batteries in the remote control (my YouView box was doing something similar earlier today and needed a couple of new AAAs).

Janice: Try carrying a "reset" on the box, this called "first time installation" on some devices, as what you have reported suggests that some form of glitch has occurred and with resetting the box being the usual way of rectifying the problem.

By the way. resetting the box will not lose anything already stored in the hard drive provided that you do "not" accidentally press reformat.

I have a bush freeview recorder which has decided to make its own decisions by changing my programme choices. I set it to record a programme and when I check I find it has set for a totally different time, date or channel but definitely not the programme I want anyway. I have tried a first time install but this hasn't helped.

Ken: Try disconnecting the Bush from the mains supply for a few minutes before reconnecting it again, as obviously the hard drive has failed to initialise, which unfortunately in many cases is bad news.
