How to Reset a Sky Digibox when 'No Signal' appears.

Reset method 1 - Delete and Rescan

  1. Turn the power off at the mains socket. Either do this by pulling the plug from the socket, or using a power switch if there is one.

  2. Remove the viewing card from the machine. Using a dry cloth or kitchen roll, clean the gold connector on the reverse of the card. Do not use any cleaning products.

  3. Check cables and connectors are in good order.
  4. Wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. With the card still out of the machine, plug the Digibox back into the mains.
  6. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  7. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  8. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  9. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

Reset Method 2 - Reset the LNB

If the above method does not work, the LNB may have a fault.
  1. Press the [SERVICES] button and then press [4] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

On Sky HD, press the [SERVICES] button and then press [0] [0] [1] then [SELECT]

Press the buttons in the sequence above exactly - do not atttempt to use [UP] or [DOWN]. Note that when you press the second 0 and 1 nothing happens on the screen until you press the final [SELECT]. This is a "hidden menu".

  2. Then press [1] to go to the RF output menu.
  3. Press [DOWN] three times to highlight the line 22Khz Command and then press [RIGHT] to change the value to [OFF].
  4. Press [DOWN] and [SELECT] to select Save New Settings.
  5. Press [SKY].
  6. Again press [SERVICES], [4], [0], [1], [SELECT]; then [1] again for the LNB Menu. (SERVICES 0 0 1 SELECT for Sky HD).
  7. Now press the [RED] button (reset all settings), then [DOWN] until you can select Save New Settings again.
  8. Press [SKY].

Reset Method 3 - Upgrade the system software

If there are still problems:

  1. Turn the Digibox off at the mains again and remove the viewing card.
  2. Whilst holding down the BACKUP key on the Digibox - NOT ON THE REMOTE - turn the mains power on.
  3. Keep hold of BACKUP until the screen displays a "UPGRADING SYSTEM SOFTWARE" message – this will be white text on a black screen. On some boxes this can appear as a half screen.

  4. Wait 10 to 20 minutes for the software to download and install. The box will restart when the process is complete.
  5. Ignore all the messages, and wait for around a minute.
  6. Try 101 for BBC One, 102 for BBC Two and 103 for ITV-1.
  7. Insert viewing card, wait a few seconds.
  8. Check 104 for Channel 4 and 105 for five.

Chris b: I had a somewhat sneaking suspicion that you may already have carried out this check, especially when you were obviously aware of the potential capacitor problems that these boxes can suffer from, however this is one of those situations whereby in your situation, i.e: no means of checking the box for a 22Khz output when a high band transponder has been selected, I don't feel that you have any option other than to take the plunge and purchase another LNB (quad type) at around £10.00 or so from numerous e-bay outlets, or alternatively to either test your box out on someone else's installation or theirs on yours.

As far as the capacitor issue is concerned, I don't suppose it would do any harm to check the capacitors for any signs of bulging or traces of dried up electrolyte on the PCB, but though sometimes they can be faulty but with nothing abnormal being noticed, likewise the left overnight cold box check cannot always be relied on either.

By the way, meant to add to my previous reply to check for reception of CCTV news on 510 (12.643Ghz) or CNN news on 506 (12.501Ghz) both being on the high band.

Chris b: Another little point I forgot to add, being that although you have carried out all of the checks mentioned you should also try the disconnecting the box from the mains supply test, as this is the only action that would allow the power unit to recover from the effects of any short circuit having occurred on its LNB control circuitry, i.e: the faulty coax feed from the dish.

jb38: I replaced the LNB with a new quad one while I was rewiring the system as the old one looked like it had seen better days anyway. So that eliminates that.

I'll check the other channels you suggested when I'm home from work and failing that I'll have a quick look inside at the capacitors, although I'm aware as you say that they don't always show signs of damage, so if there's nothing obvious then I'll try and get the box into a mates system to test it out.

Will keep you posted, thanks for the help!

jb38: I checked channel 510 and no joy so moved on to taking the box apart......

Two leaking capacitors and 3 bulging with 1/2 looking like they may be heading towards bulging. Looks like I'll be getting a capacitor kit from satcure!

Chris b: Yes, that is by far your best policy, as what you have reported is almost guaranteed to have resulted in the voltage being fed to the tuners having been dropping off over a period of time thereby causing them to gradually suffer from a loss of sensitivity, as capacitor replacement nearly always results in a significant increase in the default transponders signal level.

Maybe you could give an update on completion of the task.

Merle: The easiest way to reset a Sky box is simply by disconnecting it from the mains supply "whilst its sitting on standby" and then waiting about 30 seconds or so before reconnecting it again, but though the content of any advice given is entirely dependant on the nature of the problem you are experiencing, and so if the reset does not cure your problem then further and more detailed info is required.

jb38: I've returned with good news on my Thomson box. I got the Satcure kit through the post today and changed the capacitors on the PSU. Fired the box up and it is working perfectly.

Cheers for the help and advice throughout! Just glad to have a working box again and glad it was easy enough to do!

Chris b: Well done!! and pleased to see that you have now given your box a new lease of life, as lets face it they are amazingly reliable devices apart from the PSU problem.

These Satcure kits are really quite handy by the fact of them providing the exact components required for upgrading the PSU as otherwise they would generally have to be sourced from more than one supplier, as a matter of fact I will probably order a few kits for myself as I am always dipping in to my store of components intended for other applications connected with my work.

Anyway, thanks for the update on the situation and pleased to have been of assistance.

Cheers / jb.
