The switch off of BBC Radio 4 long wave will mean all those with older or vintage radios will sadly not be able to tune in to the network. This can be paralleled with vintage cars no longer being able to obtain fuel.

Nicholas Anderson: How many vintage radios are still in use that are unable to receive FM? I doubt there's many.

I imagine, the transmission cost per listener for BBC Radio 4's long wave service must have rocketed in recent years! Not only due to listeners migrating to other platforms due to the low fidelity audio offered on long wave, but the rising costs to power the three transmitters carrying Radio 4.

Nicholas Anderson: DXers excluded, how many people still listen to long wave on a regular basis? The frequency range is too low for decent fidelity of sound reproduction on most tuners and has been susceptible to electrical noise interference for decades. Long wave cannot even be heard properly in heavily built up areas, making medium wave transmitters infills essential for national reception coverage.

Willie Bone: Radio 4's Long Wave transmissions has been paid for by the electricity companies in recent years. With the radio teleswitch service (used to switch economy 7 meters between day and night modes) set to close, this funding with end and the transmitters will close with it.

StevensOnln1: just heard about this switch off on the good old steam radio.
I'm devastated, as I live in France and always have radio 4 on. I suppose it will still be available on BBC sounds but I won't be able to cart my computer around the house with me :-(
I guess this will affect a lot of older expats.
